I am not sure about the instant mirror return for Pentacon Six but Arax 60 can be different.

Mirror slap is noisy (vibrations.........). I personally prefer cameras with non-moving mirrors and leaf-shutters and focusing screens from the best of two worlds (sharpness and brightness).

Pentacon Six does not. And I don't think the Exakta does either as it is partially based on the Pentacon...

Quite correct, thanks. Pentacon Six removed from the list.

Hasselblad 200 and 2000 series
Mamiya 645
Pentax 645 and 6x7/67
Rollei SL66, SLX, and 6000 series
Zenza Bronica Z, D, S, S2's, S2a,...

Mamiya RZ67 with the motor-drive. 1fps, and probably the best, most well-dampened mirror in medium format.

Contax 645

Mamiya 645
Pentax 645 and 6x7/67
Rollei SL66, SLX, and 6000 series

Updated, thanks.

p.s. It's hard to say though for the Pentax 645 and Contax 645 as well as for the Rollei SLX & 6000 series motor-driven bodies if the mirror is indeed of the instant-return type. Anyone?

The Rollei 6000 series does indeed have an instant-return mirror, as well as leaf shutter lenses--not focal plane as suggested by an earlier post.

Here we go again with the nasty fake news spread by RF people who are just plain jealous of SLR owners. Get over it and buy an slr.

I'm not sure why you think returning the mirror to viewing position using a motor immediately after the exposure is not considered instant return. All 35mm DSLRs have instant return mirrors using a motor. Spring or motor, just a difference of design, especially if your camera is already battery dependent,

Almost all leaf shuttered MF cameras that have instant return mirror use a motor. The Pentax 6x7 with it's leaf shuttered lenses do not depend on a motor, but then even if the mirror returns instantly (by spring), the leaf shutter stays closed until you re-arm it, so there is no "instant viewing"... And it's still battery dependent.

I congratulate posters for staying on-topic and adding to the list (or subtracting from the list) medium format cameras that have an instant return mirror.

Now let me take a slight detour onto a different though closely related question: why have an instant return mirror? My own viewpoint is that an instant return mirror is one of the least useful features to be found on SLR cameras.

Let me give some background on how I came to that conclusion. I cut my 35mm teeth on an Exacta VX iia, which did not have an instant return mirror. At first it bothered me and made me self conscious that nearly everyone else had an SLR with an instant return mirror and I didn't, but eventually I realized that, for me at least, an instant return mirror would not be particularly helpful for producing good images. In some ways a non-instant return mirror might have even been helpful because the last image burned into my mind before the shutter operated would be the one closest to to the image produced on-film.

This is not to say that I have any great objection to instant return mirrors, or that everyone should have the same opinion as me when it comes to their utility, but I would be interested to know what other people think about this issue.

Histrorically it is not. https://camerapedia.fandom.com/wiki/Instant-return_mirror

The problem is the definition in the wiki article. Any slr mirror that returns to the viewing position right after the photograph has been taken is considered an instant return mirror regardless of the power source.

When I first came across the Exacta camera family in high school I knew it was a camera to be reckoned with. At the time I could not afford it and by the time I could, it was hard to get new ones especially since every store and discount store were pushing Minoltas.

Not at all. The definition in the given wiki link is quite correct. When your thumb (or the built-in motor) is required to reset the mirror then this cannot be considered an instant-return mirror any longer.
