Slimey 4x5 negatives

I have just finished developing some 4x5 Efke 25 negatives and the non-emulsion side is very slimey. I have developed these negatives before and have never had this problem. I am using D-76 1:1 at 5 minutes and 4.5 minutes in the fix. After they were hanging to dry about 1.5 hours I noticed a blue liquid were the film dripped this also has never happened before. Would to little developer lead to this problem? I had been using 8oz 1:1 but recently was told that the drum developer system I was using only needs 4oz. of liquid.

Sounds like the anti-halation coating from the back side never got washed off because of the low volume of liquid. I always pre-wash Efke, but there are those who don't and get great results. I think I'd just re-fix and wash them again quite well.

Just a rewash should do it.

I sometimes have a little residual "gunk" on the back of my large sheet films where the back has been in contact with the wall of the paper drum I develop them in. If that happens I just give them 10 minutes extra in a tray of water while I develop the next batch. At the end of 10 minutes (unagitated, I'm in a different room) the negatives are clear and the water blue.

Some HCA after the fix and before the wash might help. Besides shortening the wash time, I've noticed that some anti-halation coatings come off better in the HCA than the pre-wash or developer.

speaking of slimy negatives

A roll of 120 TX I developed last night came out slimy, but the two rolls of 135 Foma in with it were fine. I rewashed, then refixed and rewashed the roll, but this had no effect. I used diafine, tap-water stop, simple fix, all at fairly hot (ambient, at the moment, here) temperature. The roll seems to have dried fine, though. Any ideas what happened?
