I've seen these at Freestyle and other places, but I don't really get how it works. Do you buy the mailers, stick the roll in the envelope and send it off? How much do you pay total?
And does anyone know if there's a way to do this in Germany?

I use the Fuji mailers. It's an envelope with a little label attached. You fill out the label, stick it in the envelope with the film, and drop it in the post box. You need to put 2 stamps on it (in the US, at least), which adds about $1 to the total price.

I do.
Your assumtions are right. You could buy mailers for the Fujicolor lab in Gera at Phototec for 2 € each, write your adress on them (clearly!), stick your 35 mm or 120 film in them, stick a 1.44 € stamp on them and send them off. Takes about a week to return, good quality.
