SL66 film advance

I am new to SL66, the camera I have operates perfectly except there seems to be little or no space between the frames. Is this normal? I like having space between the frames as it makes it easier to set things up in the enlarger.

Any tips?

I have two backs, one of them had been serviced some time ago. Frame spacing is about 5mm with the serviced one and 2mm with the other back. The frame spacing can be fine tuned by a mechanic but I have no clue how this works. Sometimes weird spacing can occur if the film does sit too loose on the insert, but this leds to increased spacings in general. (But please do not try to solve your problem this way ;-) )
Small frame spaces occure sometimes when the advance crank is operated too fast. Just try to move it really slow when advancing.

I have a couple of older (non-E) backs. Both have been serviced, but the spacing still varies from 2.5 mm to 5 mm between most frames.

I only have a problem with spacing between the first and second frames. On one back the two images touch but don’t overlap, and on the other there is only about a 1 mm gap between them. I’m baffled as to why that is happening only between those first two frames. I’m usually shooting with T-Max films… I’m not sure if film type has any influence on spacing.

I like to include the borders of the negative in my prints so one thing I often do is shoot a blank for the first exposure and then take advantage of the “hidden” 13th negative space for my last frame. All in all I’m getting 12 usable exposures without any worries of run-together images.
