I will be going to Sioux Falls, South Dakota for work this summer. My plan is to fly out the week before and have the weekend to photograph. I don't mind driving -that's what unlimited mileage rental cars are for- but where to go for good landscapes or agricultural/industrial architecture?

Thanks,

Tim

Yankton is close and a great resavoir. South on the Nebraksa side going down old hwy 73 is very picturesque. There is an Indian reservation at Walt Hill just north of Decatur Nebr. At Decatur there is the bridge that goes over the Missouri that is very historic. Farm land you are smack in the central of it all. Make it down past Tekamah, you hit Herman Nebraska where I grew up. Wish I could show you around that place. I know every farm for a 10 mile radius. Any of the small town are treasures of old farm buildings, and houses. They also have the feel of old time architecture. I know Herman has an abandoned central main street that looks like it belongs in an old 1920's movie.

Aggie,

Herman sounds like a great visit with the 5x7. I hope to go in June when the days are long so I can make the best of my shooting time.

Bruce,

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll just have to see how much I can squeeze in.

Tim,
A couple of landscape destinations within an hour's drive are Blue Mounds State Park just north of Luverne, MN (about 30 miles east) and Pipestone National Monument, MN (about 50 miles northeast).

There is also the Bad Lands and Black Hills of South Dakota, just a stones throw from Sioux Falls.

What does a guy from Brooklyn know about South Dakota?

Actually, he's right. The Badlands and Black Hills are where you want to be.

My wife and I spend about 6-8 weeks a year in S.W. Mn and have opportunity to EXPLORE. We're going back in May and I will have 2-3 days by myself in the Bad Lands.

If you want landscape, it depends on the type. East River (Missouri River) is rolling hills, with occasional anomalies. West River has the Black Hills (Mt Rushmore/Crazy Horse, Hot Springs, Lead, Deadwood, Custer St. Park, Spearfish Canyon, etc), Wounded Knee massacre site, and Badlands and is more dramatic.

Just west of SF is the town of Garretson. They have Palisades St. Park and Devil's Gulch. Interesting rocks/river in these areas. Farms and small towns all over the area.

Sioux Quartzite was quarried around here, so many of the older (turn of the century) buildings are made of this pinkish rock. If you like victorian houses, on Cathedral hill is the historic district.

There isn't much industry in SF except the meat packing plant/stockyards. Photographically it isn't most people's cup of tea. There were milling/seed plants, but most of them are gone. You may have heard about the attempted implosion of the Zip feed plant (aka "The Leaning Tower of Zip") But there are a lot of older buildings in the downtown area of SF.

There is the falls (and the river itself). In the grand scheme of waterfalls, they aren't huge, but in eastern South Dakota they stand out. Going north, east and south from SF is pretty much similar looking features. East river is about subtle changes.

Oh we must not forget the Corn Palace or Wall Drug.

Hijacking my thread into the soap box is not on the agenda.

It might take a little sleuthing, but the last of the operating one room schoolhouses can be found in the Nebraska/ S Dakota area. Been there, done that. Remarkable.
