Could something like Avedon's setup* work? Or still too bulky.
* Used for a series of work in Africa.

hi john

i'd LOVE that but ... seems like it would be too much ..
its too bad someone doesn't make somethings
like the thing i linked to but giant and sell it for a reasonable price
i almost BOUGHT the small thing thinking it was giant i said $17- WOO HOO
but then realized it was only big enough to photograph a cellphone

The closest thing I can think of is an E-Z Up canopy with side panels. 10x10 ft. It would cost a lot more, though. Used ones can probably be found for $80-$100.

With some tubing and cheap diffuser non-woven you could make such mobile box yourself for little money and some work.

you 3 maybe you have the solution !
i will have to poke around and see what is what..
thanks for pointing me in the right direction

Jumping in here with suggestions. Spend some time at the outdoors store, is Cabelas. My first thought is the ice fishing tent, second thought is the duck blind, both are blacked out on the inside. One tent that impressed me with speed of assembly is called the Clam. Cabelas has their version. With a selection of scrims and gobos you might be set. Are you aware of inflatable studios? A few dollars more, how about the inflatable kids jump house? Bet when you start looking you will find many ideas.

hi Aj

thanks for the suggestions !
im hoping not to do much that is inflatable, im thinking there won't be much juice
where i hope to set up, and i don't want to deal with a honda generator ( been there , done that )
or lugging big batteries around...
i've seen the cabalas - stuff but i was hoping for something cheap
the clam ( and others ) at least on their website the last i looked were hundreds of $ ..

i like the idea though of repurposing something not made for a 3 sided studio into a 3sided studio ...
if i worked for verizon or a utility company i could ask my supervisor about buying a used, ratty tent they put
ontop of manholes !

do you need/ want translucent panels as ice fishing clam shells are pretty well light blockers. I think the idea of using lightweight pipe and fabric might be your best bet. if you can find someone to sew the panels and rod pockets
