Hey folks
I have been a happy camper with my Plustek 8200Ai for the past few months now, I scan everything in 48bit RAW for conversion in photoshop and get great results. Dust is not something I necessarily struggle with anymore, but there have been tiny streaks on some of my negatives from the lab recently and cleaning everything up in photoshop has been more than time consuming.
As far as I'm aware, there is no way to separate the infrared channel from the HDRi RAW scan outputted by silverfast. If this was possible one could easily mask the dust in photoshop and remove it without having to go in with the magic eraser tool by hand.
I have tried TIFF splitters and file conversions and been unsuccessful.

Does anyone know of a way to get only the infrared channel from an HDRi RAW scan?

I use gimp to open the 48bit hdri TIFF file. It has the ability to see the infrared channel as a separate layer.

Then I select the pixels of the ir layer and copy and paste them over into photoshop.

Depending on your scanner you might find that the ir information is not properly aligned with the dust and scratches in the color channels. You might have to manually nudge it into alignment.

Look into the channels in PS. The IR channel will be named as Alpha channel.

(unless, of course, Silverfast changed something and now applies IR dust&scratch removal before saving the raw file)

I’m not exactly sure how they do it but silverfast makes it so the IR channel doesn’t show up in Photoshop at all. I think they do it on purpose so people will pay for their software.

Silverfast uses multi-page TIFFs. The image is on page one, the IR channel is on page two.

But isn’t the normal behavior of multi page documents when opened in photoshop for photoshop to ask what page or pages you want to open?

Maybe it’s different for tiffs? I wouldn’t know the only multi page tiffs I open are from silverfast and they do not prompt to select a page when opened in photoshop.

I don't think Photoshop can work with multi page tiffs. It just displays the first page.

There's gotta be a utility to open multi page tiffs and then save pages as individual files.
