Jnanian, is it safe to dump this remaining fixer which still has fixer it it, down the drain? If so, does it make any difference if the drain goes to a septic tank? TY

it has around 50 parts / million of fixer in it and should not be dumped down the drain. federal guidelines say it has to be less than 5 parts / million
and of course different cities, towns, villages states &c have stricter or not so strict requirements. if one uses a trickle tank has the ability to get the parts / million low ( less than 1 low )
it will never reach 0 ...
i wouldn't put anything in the septic tank, kodak also has this perspective, the silver will kill off beneficial bacteria that will eat the contents of your septic tank.
i can't speak about where you live and what the laws are .. but your local water / sewer commission might be able to help ... or recycling / househole hazmat day ...

sorry if i am not helpful, i can't really suggest much, other than get the silver out, and don't dump it down your drain ... and to ask someone local who knows the answers.

smaller, 2 gallon trickle tanks soon to be available

i am in touch with another company that has 2 gallon trickle tanks / media buckets and test strips
that will be sold as a single unit. i realize the 3.5 gallon bucket might be more than what some folks here
need to use, so i did some research and found a company that could supply me ( and me to you )
smaller tanks/buckets that do the same thing. they will cost a bit less than the current 3.5 gallon tank i currently offer.

i am waiting for a quote from the sales department as i type this post.

sounds to me like that was silver-sand / silver-flake
which is close to pure silver
oh well, ... at least you gave it to hazmat !

Did you get a price on the 2 gallon units?

i thought i posted the new price in a different thread ..
the 3.5 gallon tank is now 216$ and the 7gallon tank is 256$
it ships in 2 boxes and the last time i sold one the shipping was
between 20-30$ depending on where it was going .
the other company raised their prices in the last year
and they are not any smaller or any cheaper ...

Rather than buy something for silver recovery, why not just get an old empty paint can, drill a hole in the bottom and stuff in a ball of steel wool. Drain all your spent fix through this and occasionally remove the steel wool and scrunch it up over some newspaper and the silver will fall off.

i did sometihing like this for years, also used copper flashing before it became too expensive.
when you use the steel wool or copper or whatever it is you are trading ions with
it ends up being a sludgy mess.

John, sorry I forgot to mention that you do the scrunching when the wire wool has dried out.

i would not recommend anyone scrunch up dried steel wool like this
the dust and sludge plume is not good to breath ...
a trickle tank is sealed and the "stuff" stays inside the tank
so you don't have to deal with breathing in stuff that isn't
good for one's health.

Hi John- I have a question for you...Does the fixer have to be really totally spent before using the magnet in order to not burn it out? Also, does it matter if the fixer that you would like to treat with the magnet has been sitting around for a long time (A few years)? I think I have seen these things discussed around here over the years but cannot seem to find them. Thanks!

hey there

yeah the fixer has to be well spent. it has to have about 50-52 parts/million of silver in it...
if you know whatkind of fixer it is and have some that is unused/fresh you can see how long it takes
to clear a piece of film leader and see how long the old stuff you have takes. if it takes 2x the fresh fixer's clear time
you are OK, if not .. it doesn't have enough silver in it.

the biggest problem i have heard about the magnet is buyers not using them on
fixer that is spent enough and the magnet turns black / sulfury ..
they used it on fixer that was only used a couple of times, or was "dirty" ... ( not spent )
there is about 1/4 oz of silver in a gallon of fixer (lots of prints and film processed )
these magnets seem to work well enough for waste haulers to use as a pre-treatment for their
giant ion transfer tanks ( i get emails for replacement cells from time to time ) ... not sure
if they would be buying replacement cells if they didnt' work. the difference is
a waste hauler has 15 and 50 gallon drums full of spent fixer, not 1L, from time to time.

the current spot price is in the tank ( $18.85 ) and no idea when it will get out of the tank.
seeing it will most likely take a long time for hobbyiests to fill a magnet with enough silver to refine,
it is more of a reduce the silver footprint, don't dump down the drain-thing than a get rich- thing
