silver magnet and trickle tanks

i wanted to let folks know that in addition to the silver magnet i am now distributing trickle tanks.

just a run down on the difference between the two

a silver magnet removes silver from wash water and fixer through electrolysis.
it can get a lot of the silver out, but leaves around 50 parts / million in your waste stream.

a trickle tank will remove more silver from your waste water and spent fixer.
it will get your waste stream down to around 5 parts / million or less.
it removes the silver through ionic transfer.

when you send in the silver magnet's electrode you get paid for the silver on the electrode.
you don't get paid for all of it, there are some fees involved, but not much.
the bottom half of the trickle tanks are mailed to a refiner and there is a fee for processing it, no cash is sent to you.

to give you an idea of the prices ..
the silver magnet is less than 50$ ( does not including shipping )
and the trickle tanks are less than 160$ ( does not including shipping )

the replacement cathode for the silver magnet is less than 20$ ( does not including shipping )
and the replacement bottom half of the trickle tank is less than 100$ ( does not including shipping )

good news for folks in canada !

i am waiting for an email from a canadian refiner
that will take the full silver magnet cathodes
in exchange for canadian dollars. no minimums &C just like the
refiner in the states.

i will be posting more about this soon, but this is great news for people in canada because
they don't have to ship to the states (customs ) ...
and then exchange american dollars for canadian ones.

the company was happy to offer their services.

i am happy to announce some great news for folks in canada are thinking of using the silver magnet!

i just got news from Environmental Control Systems in barrie ontario that they would like to take the silver flake from you.
they will supply dhl shipping from you to their site, and supply you with about 90% of the $$ from your full cathode.

this will allow you to send the cathode directly to them, so you don't have to deal with customs, brokers and currency exchange.

This is awesome John! And so cheep too (as compared with some whoop-dee-doo instruments that I last knew about)!

How long does it take to accumulate the silver? A full cathode means what when the rubber meets the road? Say I'm developing about 12 4x5's and a roll of 120 per week, and about 20 test strips (5x7's) and maybe what.. 10 11x14's, per week, and say I throw out my fixer before it is fully spent (I like fresh dependable fixer you can hang your hat on for the time it requires). Since I don't know what the workload of other photographers is like, maybe you could give me an idea from that? I'm guessing it would be more than a year to get a full cathode. What do you think?

hi perry

the number i have heard is that there is about 1/4 troy oz of silver in a gallon of spent fixer ...
so depending on how often you use a gallon of fixer to exhaustion ...

you don't need to wait for the cathode to be full to send it in ...
if you want to send it in with less, its up to you.
or ... if you want to just hang on to the cathode when it is full
get a new one and stock up on silver until the price goes even higher,
or sell it to a jeweler, or a chemist or put it in a safe deposit box, that is fine too

the main thing is that you are getting it out of the waste stream.

This may sound like a completely stupid question: but what's the impetus behind paying 10x cost for recovered silver? Also, is it open to US members?

the silver magnet can be used by us members
european members, people in the uk or anyone is interested in
removing silver from their spent fixer.

the problem was that if you were in canada, you would have
to send the silver across to the us, deal with customs and
maybe tariffs and brokers fees, and then convert us dollars to
canadian currency ... it was do-able, but kind of a pain ...

here in the states you can mail it direct to a refinery ( here in the states )
and get paid without having to deal with sending it to another country.
and you get paid about the same amount for your silver ... ( around 90% ) ...

hopefully in the next few weeks i'll find a company in the eu / uk
that will help out, sending overseas and dealing with tariffs, and currency exchange
is no fun.

jnan, what's the capacity of the fixer after having recovered silver? Is it merely a factor of how much thiosulfate has been used for the actual fixing process?

I've been thinking of a way to best handle a bunch of test scraps and saturated fixer. Thinking of bleach bathing and fixing out all the silver that's still soluble.

Yes Clayne can use bleach, or ferric chloride, then rinse & refix to remove all remaining silver from scrap prints/films. That's how silver is recovered from Xray films, old litho film etc, we used to reprocess many tons a year that way, the fixer recycling through a plating unit continuously.

However there's not a lot of silver in paper in the first place so it's less economic to process that way, it's usually incinerated commercially.

to successfully find a refiner who would be interested
in accepting the silver magnet when it is ready to refine it.

they are able to refine your silver whether you live in the UK or EU,
and give you around the same amount
for it as the refiners we have working with us in the USA and Canada.

After exposing my albumen prints, I wash them until the water runs clear. I believe, though I'm not sure, that what I am washing off is unexposed silver. Can this water be processed in the same way as fixer?

To be honest, I have seldom seen a more deceiving and ridiculous statement than this on APUG. I would qualify it as spam.

1 lbs = +/-454 gram
1 troy ounce = +/- 31 gram

Thus 1 lbs = 454/31 = +/- 15 troy ounce!

The ECS company, in a ridiculous calculation, only pays you "10x the price of 1 troy ounce of silver for each pound of silver", while 1 lbs or pound of silver is actually worth 15x times the price of 1 troy ounce of silver, as it is 15x times more silver based on the weight.

This means this company is making a 50% profit on the bought silver, and even has the guts to charge you $85 refining costs. Now the 50% profit may be a "normal" profit in the branch, but to hide it by some ridiculously difficult calculation, is just deceit.

By the way, current silver price = +/ $30,- per troy ounce (half a year ago still around $18,-), or almost $0.9 to $1 per gram, see graph for trend of the last year.

i was asking this same questions
because i may be making salt prints soon,
and will have the same run-off.

it has to be in some sort of fix solution from what i was told,
so your hypo could be processed this way, but the water bath ...
you could pour a super saturated salt solution in it and filter ( coffee filter )
the silver precipitate. that is what a chemist told me when i asked him ....

on the ecs website it clearly states this:

" ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL SYSTEMS in agreement with John Nanian of the Analog Photography Users Group has agreed to accepted all Silver Magnet Cathode's from all Canada Wide APUG members for Silver Refining. We offer no cost shipping and a 90% payment of silver less refining fee. "
