Silver Gelatin

I want to start playing with liquid emulsion and I am looking for the book "Silver Gelatin", preferably somewhere in Europe. It seems to be out of print for a while, so its difficult to track.

At the same subject, any advice regarding coating stretched canvas with liquid emulsion (got a sample bottle some time ago), would be appreciated.

FWIW, Bookfinder.com shows some copies that may not be on Amazon, and some European sources, but it's pretty pricey. Probably worthwhile to wait for the reprint.

if I recall correctly, Chris (Athanasius80 ??) here has played around with making his own silver gelatin emulsions. Do a search on his username and see what he's posted about it. I know there were several threads here on the topic, and you might just PM him for advice on how to make them.

Thank you guys, I am going to check out the resources you mentioned and see where it takes me.
Fotoimpex is probably where I will be buying my liquid happiness and I got their catalog.

Btw, a quickie: I got a tiny square stretched canvas board. To use it, I just warm the bottle up and coat it once with a baking brush?
Then just expose and process as normal? Since the board has some depth, can I have it upside-down on the try or should I do it in a deeper dish?

By the way, I just bought an as new copy from Amazon UK last week for $30. You just have to have good timing.

I've been told the new printing has arrived in the UK, so it should be available from Amazon shortly, we should have it in stock at Silverprint shortly.

I've been quite rightly taken to task by Photo Engineer for the inadequacies of the emulsion formulae published therein. Putting it in perspective, the book was put together 13 years ago, before the internet, when emulsion work by enthusiasts was almost unknown, so the recipes are now to be considered 'base camp 1' material. The information now posted on this website regarding emulsion recipes is much more valuable.

I would not want to 'take you to task' for an excellent book. You have been limited to the poor published formulas is all. And you have warned people in the book that the use of active gelatin or sulfur sensitization may be advised to get the best out of some formulas.

I will continue to recommend it to all of my students, and I add on a methodology for them to update your formulas to more modern forms if they desire.
