Sigma 50mm f1.4

OK, OK, OK, so the review spends all it's time talking about d1g1, but if we really have an advance in design for a 50mm (EOS users at least!), shouldn't we just be happy? :confused:

You did not read it propperly: IT IS A NEW PRIME LENS FOR THE CANON EOS !

It looks good, but if it is a replacement for the existing EOS lenses ? I have no Canon, so somebody else might want to comment on that.

The chart at the link below suggests reasonable usability with many AF Nikons, but not with the manual focus models.

Looks a great lens, they have a 1.4/30mm allso and I have seen some great results from it on 1/2 35 (18x24mm like the old Olympus Pen F)

Just trying to be carefull and Analogue !

Oh they work fine on the propper camera, but I like the sliding of the aperture ring on my Copals and Compurs too.

The reviewer has tested them on the Nikon D3x and Sony A900, both of which I understand to be full frame, plus he also talks about compatability with "all EOS cameras back to 1988", which definitely would include film.

The 50/1.4 Sigma is a fullframe lens that will work on film or digital but I thought the 35/1.4 was small sensor digital only and wouldn't cover film or fullframe digital.

Peter: Sigma says about the 30: APS-C format or smaller (4/3) only, the 50 seems to OK for full-frame, although I would like to see that first.
Both are made with D in mind.

OK, my mistake on this one as I had read it as being the 50!

The 50 definitely covers 35mm. In fact it vignettes less wide open than many designs. Performance is heavily biased towards closer subjects and wide apertures, this is a portrait or candid lens, not a landscape lens. Should work on any EOS body, although early runs had focusing issues. Works on any nikon body which supports G lenses and AF-S focusing (So limited use on any AF body before the F5, doesn't work on the F601 at all, and the only manual focus body it can be used on is the F601m, which supports G lenses in P and S modes unlike its AF sibling).
