Did a little gallery hopping in the city today. Went to the john Stevenson Gallery for the first time.(on west 23 st.) Had some interesting silver prints by a woman named Josephine Sacabo. Uses a heavy tinting procedure. Almost look like albumen.
Then I went over to the Robin Rice gallery on 11th between Greenwich and Washington. Tina West was the artist and the prints were taken with a 4x5 and polaroid 55 then printed ala Epson.Good subject matter so the prints still had value for me. The Soho Photo Gallery(on White st.) was having its annual members show which was a hodgepodge of everything one could imagine. Alot of digital along with traditional. This show didn't do anything for me as the work itself was extremely lackluster. Then I blasted uptown to the Moma where I could only cruise the collections gallery. There are some excellant prints ala Weston, Emerson(english) ; some very early plat work ;White. Trouble was the place was worse than the New York subway during rush hour. And all this abuse for just a $20 admission fee. Best bet is to stay with Galleries which are free and uncrowded. Best part of the day-taking out my TLR after dusk to do some evening shots in Tribeca in the rain and fog. Looking is great but doing is better....

I was in the neighborhood, but not gallery hopping--shopping for vinyl records at Academy on 18th St. actually.

At Stevenson, did you look through the drawers? They have a lot of great stuff that isn't on display.

draws

David-did not look through the draws. Did introduce myslf to Mr. Stevenson. He was rather busy trying to make a sale of some Cy Decosse prints to a couple. I asked him for an explanation of the prints up on the wall and he was stressing how the paper used was "heavy in silver" We all know about that line... otherwise he runs a first class operation. A little dismayed at how hard he was trying to sell prints. Guess he has got to pay the rent. All in all the best prints of the day were the Westons at the MOMA along with the plat. work of Emerson
and someone else who escapes my mind-but the print in question was made around 1905 in Plat and was still just soooo nice!

The Cy DeCosse prints are really impressive. I gather he's making pt/pd prints from multilayer separations. Gums as well, but with really bright colors.

David-if you want to see some great work that YOU can afford go to Christian Nze ebay store and purchase a print from him. No one I know of gets the blacks he's getting as I own several.I'll rate his flower stuff right there with any Cy Decoose print. He's charging rediculously low prices. Get 'em while their hot!!

Hi David,

The platinum prints I'm making for Cy have only ever been from single negs - no multiple negs involved. The three colour gum prints are from digital separations (originals shot on film).

Keith.

Peter, I took your advice and ordered a print from Christian. I look forward to receiving it soon.

Thanks and look forward to going to Bish Bash falls state park this spring if possible.
