I've never worn my cap backwards except when I flip it around under a darkcloth, so the brim won't hit the groundglass. But for decades I routinely skewed my cap a bit to the left. This is because I have sensitive eyes, and when you're driving, some extra glare naturally comes
from the left, through the driver's side door window. Then somebody started accusing me of dressing like a pimp, because they supposedly
skew their baseball caps! I thought pimps wore either fur hats or velvet bowler hats. I can't even afford a fur hat!

You're right, they're misinformed. Skewing your cap is gangsta, not pimp.

I thought skewing/reversing the cap was an inability to read the instructions under the brim.

In fact I was the first guy to wear my cap backwards. I was also the first to wear my cap sideways. It was all a long, long time ago but both instances were simply due to errors I made when trying to put my cap on. For some reason, each became a thing.

I was the first to empty the bag of fries into the opened lid of the Big Mac container.

I've always call those caps with the peak at the back "IQ Reducers".

p.s. That stands for "Image Quality" for anyone easily offended

I always thought it would have been better if the guys who wore their baseball caps back to front would have put their pants on the same way, and avoid them contributing to the gene pool

This is all typical web disinformation...

A baseball cap cannot be worn peak forward and down (like intended for a catcher) if you are using a portrait /landscape camera and you shoot quickly, unless you only shoot landscape.

A baseball cap worn peak astern will provide some protection for neck against big C problems - which lots of us are exposed to because of genetics and ozone hole... you need to have the nice 'purple sheen' skin to be reasonably safe.
