I actually do like the potential of the 400 220 film. I really liked some of my images where there was little physical damage, so if Shanghai have sorted this out then I will be a customer:



 
 

Assuming quality control is good I'll probably be an occasional user at those prices.

I've been using GP3 100 in 127 and have found it doesn't wind tightly onto the take up spool. I don't know if this is my cameras, both that I used were lower end and vintage. Otherwise it's a very nice film, currently the best value in 127.
 
Catlabs X Film 80 which uses the same backing paper (and most likely same manuf facilities) has the same issue, but not in all my cameras. Mostly in older folders.

I got 100 feet for around $70. Each roll is about 2.7 feet. That would give me about 37 rolls give or take from the reel. So, about $1.90 a roll if my maths are up to date. Factoring in the waste round it off to $2.00 a roll.
 
I'm going to shoot the first 220 roll during the coming days.

This reminds me that I don't know how to develop the film. My standard developer is ID-11. I haven't found dev times for ID-11 or D-76 (or any dev times) on the "official" page where I bought the film.

"GP3 Official Account", do you have official recommendations?
 

Massive Dev Chart has some times on it (here for ID-11: https://www.digitaltruth.com/devchart.php?Film=Shanghai%&Developer=ID-11%&mdc=Search&TempUnits=C&TimeUnits=D), not sure how accurate it is, but at least its a good starting point.
 
MDC suggestions worked well for my 127 Shanghai GP3 100 in ID-11.

I'm not ready to buy the 220 yet but it's on my "to do" list along with 620. Probably early next year when Christmas is done with. For me the 127 and 620 are fun formats I dabble with. I don't own any high quality cameras in those formats but I do own some basic, vintage models. 220 I can use more seriously in my Kiev 6C. But that is such a heavy and bulky beast it is not often brought out of hibernation. Perhaps next spring/summer though.

I thought the dev times were printed inside the box, as in most B&W films.

The times are a bit longish IMO for a 100 speed film, maybe this isn't a 100 speed film.

On Oct-14 they sent me a "shipped" email with tracking number.

I didn't follow the shipment ("it arrives when it arrives"), and, yes, it arrived...

Your maths seem fine but is this Shanghai 220 film of which you speak? No-one else seems to have even picked up on this incredible $2.00 a roll

No, it's hand rolled 220 from 70mm stock.

Oh yes. It's quite involved. Once you have the rhythm down it's about 10 minutes of work a roll. Many many steps.

Make sure paper is spooled backwards. Put rubber bands on wrists. Line up uncut film, splicer and film safe. Lights off, open can, unroll to pre-marked spots on bench, cut, roll up put in safe. Repeat. Place cut length in slitter, pass through slitter, cut ragged ends roll up back into safe. Repeat for all pre-cuts. Double check 70mm can and film safe. Turn on lights, tape 70mm can closed and set aside. Line up spools and paper. Paper and spools have to be prepared just so. Lights out. Roll slit film onto spools and papers backwards. Also paper has been marked where shot 12 is. Finish rolling all the way up and rubber band.

Lights on.

Unroll paper carefully and use precut tape to tape down beginning of film to paper. Sometimes I lose frame one. Roll, band, mark done.

I'm leaving out some nitty gritty steps though. Worth the work.

Unperfed Portra 160NC and 400NC and Plus-X Aero with perforations. I'm always on the lookout for more 70mm though.
 
Thanks for the full explanation, Cholentpot . It is difficult to see the whole process in my mind's eye but I get the general idea. I can see it taking quite a bit of practice
