Power of Pyro
tp.gif
The first evening of the workshop we’ll get to know each other, show some prints and establish a baseline we can work from.
tp.gif
We will begin each of the first two mornings in the field shooting three different contrast challenges, normal contrast negatives will be exposed along with scenes of extreme low contrast and extreme high contrast, the latter two challenges not commonly thought able to yield printable results.
tp.gif
The extreme contrast challenges will be the proving ground for Steve’s Pyro workflow. You will learn the characteristics of both Pyrogallol and Pyrocatechin based formulas. Why one is superior in almost every aspect relative to sheet film and why it is so important for roll film users. Film will be processed these first two mornings
tp.gif
Steve’s philosophy is sharing the fundamentals of why certain techniques work so that students truly can adapt his principles to their own individual workflow. Steve’s approach to teaching is laid back and non-demanding but at the same time every minute of each day is aimed at gaining knowledge and advancing each student’s technique.
tp.gif
Semi – Stand & Reduced Agitation techniques will be demonstrated using side-by-side comparisons with traditional film processing methods. Prior to the discovery of this technique altering the film’s “Characteristic Curve” was not possible with Wet Process forms of film development. When Steve’s negative making principles are combined with Reduced Agitation techniques in concert with Split Contrast Printing techniques, Silver prints of extraordinary quality and range result. Steve’s methodology combines selective contrast altering capabilities in concert with traditional wet process materials yielding a Thru Process philosophy not commonly taught in today’s analog world.
tp.gif
The final two & half days of the week will be spent learning to Split Contrast print using Multi-Contrast papers. Little known techniques used prior to MC papers are combined with Split Contrast Printing techniques yielding controls for Silver printers never before possible. The final morning of the workshop will be spent Toning for permanence including a demonstration of Split toning, an elusive technique but when mastered extraordinary prints of subtle color and increased permanence result.

Steve Sherman has taught Wet Process Workshops throughout the United States and Canada for 25 years. Sherman was the photographer back in 2003 that perfected the modern day Semi-Stand method of processing film. Since that discovery the Reduced Agitation technique has provided film photographers around the world with contrast control never before possible.
Steve has enjoyed one man shows in both the United States and Canada. His photographs are in University Archives and in private collections throughout North America. He is represented by galleries in Kentucky and Toronto, Canada

Amazing Tri-Color Gum With Chris Anderson August 14th-19th, 2016

Gum prints are essentially photographically controlled watercolor prints made in a 19th Century process called gum bichromate. Gum Arabic is mixed with watercolor paint and photosensitive ammonium dichromate, and painted onto paper. When exposed to light in contact with an enlarged negative, the gum Arabic hardens into an image that is “developed” in plain water. Casein, a colloid like gum, is practiced in much the same way so two processes can be learned for the “price of one!”
The workshop will center on simple digital negatives, so a laptop with Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, or Lightroom plus rudimentary knowledge of one of these programs (for example, sizing, sharpening, cropping images, even maybe knowing how to add a curve) is important. So is bringing lots of color digital images to choose from. Aside from a few simple supplies from home (teaspoons, hair dryer, towel, apron, and the like) the rest of the supplies will be covered under a class fee, including multiple pigment colors with which to experiment.
Participants tend to work from 9 AM–9 PM, with some early birds and night owls working longer. By the time the workshop ends, all should be comfortable with these processes to hit the ground running when returning home.

Daguerreotype: A Contemporary Approach Jerry Spagnoli July 31st -August 5th, 2016

The daguerreotype is as much an object to hold in your hand as an image to look into. This class presents a method for producing high quality daguerreotypes without the use of the dangerous chemicals usually associated with the process. This method was discovered by Edward Bequerrel in the 1840's and has existed as a scientific curiosity until now. It is a process, simple in its parts but full of subtle techniques.
We will cover everything from how to manufacture daguerreotype plates to finishing and casing the final image and will also cover how to build and maintain the unique equipment necessary for you to continue on your own.
Production of film positives will be presented, for those who wish to use the contact printing method of exposing the plate, and how to modify a conventional film holder for those who wish to expose their plates in a camera. As a finishing touch, you will learn several methods for making cases to hold the finished image.

Carbon Printing with QTR Digital Negatives With Sandy King July 24-29th, 2016

Carbon is one of the oldest of all photographic processes, having been introduced more or less in its present form in 1864 by the Englishman Joseph W. Swan. It is a contact printing process that gives a final image that consists of a pigment suspended in hardened gelatin. Carbon is without question one of the premier photographic processes in history as regards image quality. Prints made with the carbon process have a unique image quality characterized by surface relief and can be made in a wide range of colors and tones, the choice limited only by the availability of suitable tissue. Carbon prints are also highly permanent, as stable if not more so than platinum prints.
The carbon transfer workshop at the Photographers Formulary will provide detailed hands-on instruction that will teach students every step of this fascinating but complicated process. All of the various steps in making a carbon print will be explored in depth, including sensitizing carbon tissue to make it sensitive to UV light, preparation of final support papers, mating the sensitized and exposed tissue with a final support, and development of the carbon print in warm water. The students will also learn how to make carbon tissue, and to size and harden art papers as supports for the final carbon image.
The workshop will explore in detail the Sensitometry of carbon printing with both analog film negatives and with digital negatives. Specific instruction will be provided on exposing and developing negatives for printing with carbon, and in making digital negatives.
The carbon transfer workshop will be taught by Sandy King, a fine art photographer from South Carolina who is one of the most experienced carbon printers in the world. He has published numerous articles on carbon printing in both print and on-lines sources, including Photovision, Silvershotz and View Camera and has conducted numerous workshops on carbon printing in the USA and abroad.

Are the two classes beginner and advanced, or is the second week's class a continuation or expansion of the first week?

I'm not sure which two classes you are referring to here. Each Class is an individual class for 5 days. As for the level that each class covers it is based on the enrollment and because the classes are small they usually can cover beginning and advanced in the same week.

The Gum-Platinum Print with QTR - Kerik Kouklis June 26th-July 1st, 2016

During this intensive 5-day workshop you will begin by learning to make high quality digital negatives using the Quad Tone RIP (QTR) program and Epson printers. You will learn how to calibrate and control this powerful tool in an easy and straightforward way. We will then cover in detail the making of fine platinum/palladium prints from the negatives you make during the workshop or from pre-existing large format or digital negatives. The platinum/palladium process is quite easy to learn and Kerik's casual and friendly teaching style will have you making excellent prints almost from the start. Then you will learn to use gum bichromate overprinting to stretch the medium into a new realm. Adding one or more layers of gum bichromate over a platinum print will result in a final print with added depth and richness and endless possibilities of color to enhance the emotional impact of the image. Once mastered, many printers find it difficult to go back to the straight platinum process for their work. While previous experience in any of the alternative processes is helpful, it isn't a prerequisite to attend this workshop. Each student should provide negatives no larger than 8x10 as well as high quality scans or digital camera files that will be made into digital negatives. You can also scan negatives during the workshop, but this uses up valuable time. Be prepared to take your work in a new direction and never look back. This process is lots of fun and soon becomes addictive.

Bring your previous printing skills, but be willing to try new approaches as well.

Bringing your own laptop is preferred.

Black & White Landscapes Field Sessions to Darkroom Nathan McCreery June 12-16, 2016

Black & White Landscapes from Field Sessions to Darkroom With Nathan McCreery June 12-16, 2016

The Primary focus of this workshop will be the creation of outstanding photographs, primarily in a film based workflow. Because there are no contemporary color materials available, or designed for the small darkroom we will work mainly in black and white, although concepts in making fine photographs in color may be addressed. It is designed for anyone with an interest in using photography as a method for creating images that are personally expressive. Nathan is a master printer ad flows easily back and forth from image production using film in wet darkroom, into a digital workflow, and has even worked at methods of combining the two.

The workshop will be comprised of field sessions, where we work together to produce beautiful or perhaps even disturbing photographs. There will be teaching sessions in the incredible facilities at the Photographers Formulary in Condon, Montana as well as darkroom sessions in their facilities. We ask you to work hard, very hard for the period of time the workshop is in session. Field sessions typically begin well before first light and last until the direction of light is no longer conducive to making emotive photographs. Usually we take a break around mid-morning to have breakfast and meet again in the early afternoon to look at photographs created by the instructor and to critique student work. In this workshop we will also have access to darkrooms, which is fairly uncommon so some of the sessions will revolve around darkroom practice and process. Everything is open to discussion and nothing is off limits as we delve into what it is that makes a great photograph. Why is it that some images seem to sing and you can't take your eyes off of them while others are either difficult to look at or are so boring you don't want to look at them? Art is hard work and there is no "magic formula" but there is a method to it and it can be learned by individuals that are motivated and willing to learn.

In the past we had students using every format of camera imaginable from 35 mm to medium and large format. I have even had students using pin-hole cameras. So nothing is out of bounds. The only necessity is that you have an open mind and a desire to learn the art of photography. Even if you have never used film in your art and have only worked in a digital work flow, you can learn the film process and you may surprise yourself!
It would be hard to imagine a place more conducive to creating great photographs than in the breath taking landscape of Northern Montana. Truly one of the most beautiful and wild places on the North American Continent. It is in that setting that we will be learning the art and about the art of photography.

Mordançage With Elizabeth Opalenik August 28 - September 2, 2016

In this workshop we shall begin with a brief history of the mordançage process and the work of Jean Pierre Sudre, the French photographer that created the 1960 formula we use today. As her mentor and friend for over 15 years, Elizabeth learned the process directly from this master in his Provence atelier. Viewing their original work in Mordançage will add valuable insight into directions for making it your own creative voice.
Together students shall mix the chemistry and begin with an instructor demonstration on understanding the test strips to discover proper exposures for negatives or photograms. What takes time to create, time respects. Mordançage takes time to master. Information on negatives or materials to bring shall be sent prior to the workshop. Darkroom days will be spent testing various paper and redeveloper combinations, experimenting with oxidation and toners to alter color, and deciding to save or not to save the veils. Often, just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. Discussions will also focus on intent for the final image. Papers, chemicals and notebooks with formulas will be supplied.
By the end of the workshop, students will have a safe working knowledge of the process, and leave with archivally processed images. You will have a good foundation into the techniques if you decide to continue in your darkroom. After 25 years of committing to the mordançage process, Elizabeth has many possibilities, pitfalls and discoveries to share. By working with a small group of photographic peers, students can combine information on papers available today to further enhance their creativity. Experimenting is highly encouraged. A working knowledge of the darkroom is essential.
