Who here was never banned from a forum? I did too but not from the same one, alleged violation of variable geometry site rules, you know, those which apply to some but not to all. As Jean de la Fontaine wrote centuries ago:

"Selon que vous serez puissant ou misérable,
Les jugements de cour vous rendront blanc ou noir."

The court will render judgement according to your station: the powerful innocent, the powerless guilty.

Back to the original topic, yes technical discussions are way too serious and narcissic (I did this, I think that, bla bla), this is was I noticed on APUG but also on other sites. Most of the time, the gallery part is more relax.

My Francophile polyglot dictionary is broken, I shall Google said quote! It does sound self explanatory though, especially with your reference! Well, as for myself, unlike most prisoner's, I have cellphone photo proof of the said "harassment" . however, just like prisoner's, I am still locked up in virtual abandonment, without the ability of parole, or convincing the "judge" that I am innocent!

"Everything that gives pleasure has its reason. To scorn the mobs of those who go astray is not the means to bring them around."

Photography (at least the way we practice it) is a marriage between science and art. There has to be a technical aspect (and understanding) to achieve our aesthetic goals. To make a compelling image, we first need to be able to see, then be able to translate what we see to a sheet of paper. You can't separate the two.

APUG is made up of a very disparate group of people. Some are new to film, and still working out the basic scientific aspects. Others have honed their technical skills, and are looking to improve the expressive aspects. It's all good...

i realize this eddie, and it IS all good
but when the site has gotten so serious that
at times it seems full of extremists
who are unable to do anything but
go on and on and on about NOTHING
and when this is suggested you get shouted down ..
it seems a bit ridiculous
there is a difference gear talk, development chatter
and off the deep end ... IMNSHO

John- I don't see the site as serious, or not serious. Certain threads will go in a certain direction, depending on the OP's purpose. Personally, I'm not interested in the "I have the 1.8 lens, should I buy the 1.2?" kind of threads. I really don't care about the different arguments about "best" film/developer/camera, either. There's a reason there are so many choices. It's up to the user to decide what's best for them.

I'm drawn to threads about image making... the thought process behind it, and those trying to push themselves beyond the basics. I haven't used a camera/lens in months, yet I've produced a bunch of new photographs (my abstracts and cityscapes). After 40+ years of film & darkroom, I'm still amazed by the infinite possibilities this medium offers. It's what keeps me going, and pushing my own limits.
