I can't seem to find any Sepia toner for sale in Canada, and it seems the "regular" sepia toners can't be shipped by air or internationally. I have found some Kodak Sepia II at Darkroomcentral, but it tones too strongly for my taste. Anyone know any stores in Canada that I could order it from? I want to experiment with it in combination with selenium.
TIA,
John

I could swear I saw some Berg Sepia at either Henry's or Downtown Camera at Church and Queen in Toronto last month. I nearly picked it up, but I was looking for the Berg Selenium more than anything.

Dilution dilution dilution. Water the stuff down, and then you have more time to decide when there is enough tone for your taste. Then Big Yellow's ole Sepia II might fit the bill.

Make your own carbamidtoner without bad smell and a nice braun collor
5g. potasiumbromid + 10g. potasium + 1l. tapwater it is the blecker
bleck your pictures to it dissapear.
Make the toner 6g. thiocarbamid + 8g.sodiumhydroxsyd + 1l. tapwater
after rinsing in tapwater put the disapered picture in the tonerbath about
1 min. and rinse again. esey and not expensiv.
(there was a url link here which no longer exists)

I purchase from Nymoc in Toronto and mix from scratch, You may want to try this route, lots of formulas here for it.

I've been mixing my own theocarbamide for a year or so now. Cheaper and lots of latitude for dilutions, splits, tone. Can't remeber, but I think I got the chemicals (powder) from B&S.

Thanks everyone, I have some Sepia II and will try Mike's dilution suggestion. In the long run it sounds like the best alternative for me is to make it.

Sly, who and where are B&S?

Bostock & Sullivan. Arozona I think. They have a web site.

Yes, make your own. 100g of NaOH in 1 liter h20, 100 g thiocarbamide in 1 liter h2o, and that is your stock. 100ml of the NaOH and 20ml of the thio in 1 liter will give a yellow brown. At the other end, 100ml of the thio and 20 of the NaOH gives a dark brown. Both respond differently when followed up with gold toner. If anybody can afford that anymore.

Several Henrys locations have Berg Sepia in stock. Winnipeg is the closest to you but order online and they'll ship it. Some have Berg Selenium too, I bought mine through them. As you say due to hazmat regs most won't ship it from the US but B&H doesn't say no when I put it in my shopping basket and ask for shipping to my address.

Yup, Bostick and Sullivan. Great Folks.

B&S will only ship a maximum of 30grams of Sodium sulfide before charging a hazmat fee (which I don't think is enough for even a litre of solution) and Photographers' formulary won't ship it out of the US. That pretty much rules out the "traditional" sepia toner formula for me.

Sly, are you making the "Formulary Thiourea Toner" found on page 280 of the Darkroom Cookbook? If I'm reading it correctly it looks like the end result is the same without the hazmat problems in shipping. Photographers' Formulary sells it ready made, so I think I'll get some to try before investing in chemicals.

Can't you get that stuff from Nymoc in Toronto?
