I have a Piezography Selenium K7/MPS setup for my Epson 3800. A perfect match since it can use all 9 cartridges with both regular and MPS (gloss) black and a cartridge for Gloss Optimizer (GO). For matte paper qualities I have managed to get really stunning prints, but my only serious attempt to use glossy paper is the Jon Cone Studio Type 5 paper. Inkjetmall sent me a previously made custom made curve for this paper on the 3800. It looks really sweet after a second run with a coat of GO.
I have three glossy curves that I got from Inkjetmall after I purchased the ink setup, one is for Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Baryta.
I have some of the paper Harman (by Hahnemuhle) Gloss Baryta, which I guess is the same as the former Harman FB Al. I have just ordered a custom curve for this paper, based on a printed target that one can find on the Inkjetmall website.
The closest curve I got was the Photo Rag Baryta curve (I am not familiar with this paper), and a few weeks ago I tried to print on Harman (by Hahnemuhle) Gloss Baryta with this curve. The results were disappointing.
When I look at the deep shadows/blacks on the print from an angle, I see a kind of bronzing effect. It is just like the blacks appear somewhat brighter than the near-blacks. It is hard to describe the appearance in words (in a foreign language).
In my mind I had two possible problems causing this:
1. The curve does not match and the ink deposit of the curve is the cause.
2. I have filled the MPS-black cartridge with regular Shade 1 (matte black).
I did a test print on the Type 5 paper with two large 100% black rectangles with Shade 1 and MPS black. I put a coat of GO over both to check for differences. If I had filled the wrong ink in the cartridge I should not be able to see a difference.
But I do. The MPS black is slightly deeper and and more shiny than the Shade 1 ink.So I can rule that one out.
So I am guessing that my problem will be solved when I get the proper and custom made curve for this specific printer/paper-combination.
My question is, can there be a third issue causing this that I am not thinking of?
Best regards,
