scratched negative

I have a 4x5 negative with a small cratch , is there a way to cover up the scratch, do you know if retouching fluid is still available? Thank you for your help

Products like Edwal No-Scratch will do the trick if the scratch is on the base (non-emulsion) side of the film. Some people also use nose oil -- use your finger to smear some oil from your nose on the emulsion. This doesn't work for me, though; my complexion's not the greatest, so I get tiny flecks of skin coming off with the oil, which turn up in prints like really bad dust.

you can also use a higher grade body oil that is located behind the ear.
an old timer told me " never from the nose, always behind the ear! "
swirl it around and it will diffuse the light ...

I've never heard that one before. I guess it would be a mistake to take a shower before going into the darkroom!

I didn't realize body oils came in different grades. I wonder where you would find the super high-grade body oil? Someone should do some research...there may be an un-tapped new industry in tough economic times

If you don't want to use a "body oil" one can use Vaseline. Just apply to the emulsion and wipe off- it will fill the scratch. Just make sure that when your done printing you clean the negative with film cleaner.
