First post here, so thank you in advance for your help. I have this issue with my scanner when I try to scan shots that are a little underexposed they leave dark horizontal lines. I am using a Canonscan fs4000us scanner on VueScan, multiexposure, and 1 pass @ 4k DPI. These horizontal lines look similar to "banding" issues I have seen on other threads however, in my case the lines seem to be much wider than the ones I have seen on different threads. It is very annoying because the negative itself doesnt have these lines in them. Another thing I find frustrating is when I use the "Preview" button on Vuescan and save that specific file it does not have the same issue. This has me at my wits end and any insight would be super helpful. I will attatch an example of the "Scan" with the banding and the "Preview" that seems to lack the banding. This has been a very consistent issue with many of my scans. Thanks!

1. Is vuescan preview the same scan dpi as the scan dpi?
2. Vuescan settings do not match all other photo scanning software settings, it can be a PITA to adjust.
3. What do you get when you save as RAW then adjust in post?
4. What OS?
5. Dirty optical path.
6. Bad cable/connection to the scanner/computer.
7. Bad scanner power supply/scanning motor resulting in the scanning head not moving smoothly throughout the scan; scan lamp changing intensity during the scan.

I would use a different scanning software at the same dpi if your system will allow it. Next I would change the USB/interface cable. Last open the scanner and clean the optical path which may require a trip to the repair shop.

1. Yes both preview and scan are @ 4k DPI
3.I save as a raw tiff file and invert on photoshop
4. Running windows 11
5. Not sure what that is?
6. Any way to test this?
7. Thats interesting, but this difference only happens with slightly underexposed shots its very weird.

I see light horizontal squiggles that look like hair strands.

5. Dirty optical path. 5. Not sure what that is? The optical path from the light source of the scanner/the film being scanned/scan sensor when scanning a piece if film.
6. Bad cable/connection to the scanner/computer. 6. Any way to test this? Replace the cable, use a different socket on the computer or both.

This suggest that the banding exists on all scans but only becomes evident on some negatives.

I'm running Win 10 2H2 on a Dell Precision laptop. Older scanning programs that would not load on Win 8.1 or early versions of Win 10 now run.
Try the Canon software that shipped with the scanner, downloadable at https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/...rt-scanners-canoscan-series/canoscan-fs4000us and give it a try, it should run on Win11.

The problem with the Canon SW is the driver. It's not supported since Win2000. Currently, about the only way to use the FS4000US is to use Vuescan, with it's own driver. This is how I'm using mine with Win10/SCSI.

Make sure you're not blocking the scanner calibration area.

I had never ending problems with my Canoscan so I switched out to Epson and never had a problem when I had my Vuescan set properly as setting them properly can be quite a chore. When it works properly I just leave it alone and scan away also the people at Vuecan are quite helpful when you have problems like I did at first.
