Sandy,

never heard of a Scitex scanner. Check the VueScan list of supported scanners here or send Ed Hamrick a mail:

http://www.hamrick.com/vuescan/vuescan.htm#supported

Creo-Scitex, now Kodak, are among the best professional flatbed scanners every made. If you are not familair with this line of scaners you might want to do a Google search.

My point in the earlier message was simply to suggest that not every scanner in the world, outside of Imacon and drum scanner, is supporter by Vuescan. There are many high end professional scanners that are not supported by Vuescan.

And yes, I had already checked with Ed Hamrick before about support of the EverSmart scanners, so my question to you was rhetorical.

Ahh, ok, so we are not here to talk about scanning, scanners, tips 'n tricks, but we are here to practice rhetorics. Very valuable information, thank you.

So it's time for me to quit here, because I'm not that good in rhetorics in your language, because I definitely can't know any fu**ing scanner in this world, and because I don't like if someone starts playing games with me.

Don,
This may be one of those things that is a matter of personal preference.

No, Ted is saying this based on the delivered performance of the scans.

My experience is that for many scans, they produce similar (seemingly equal) results. But occasionally, a difficult negative will produce better results in one than the other. In these cases, it seems that SF is always the software producing better results. In difficult negatives, I've seen banding/posterization problems with VS that never show up on SF.

So, all things created equal, I'd prefer to use SF because I believe it produces a better result. It just takes a little more time to figure out the interface to good effect.

Not sure why you are upset. You stated that Vuescan would work with any scanner in the world except Imacon and drum scanner. I figured that was not correct but on the chance that you knew more than me I contacted Hamrick by email. He confirmed that Vuescan does not support the EverSmart and there are no plans to do so.

Vuescan has a lot of loyal users and I appreciate your comments. However, there is no point in making claims about its use that are beyond your area of knowledge and experience.

To expand on Sandy's comments, Vuescan works with almost all of the prosumer and mid range scanners on the market now and produced for the past many years. However, AFAIK, it doesn't work with any drum scanners or high-end flatbeds such as the Creo's, Cezannes, Fuji's, Purop Eskofots, etc. Of course, Silverfast only works with a few of them as well.

Is it possible to try out the IT8 profiling with the demo version of VueScan? I downloaded it, and have done a side by side comparison to NikonScan. Vuescan tends to scan not as dark as Nikonscan, and holds a bit more detail in the slide I'm testing, but is still quite dark, and doesn't do the slide justice at all. I can't see any appreciable improvement on sharpness either. I took the photo with a Canon 17-40 f/4 L and the slide is pinsharp under a loupe. Onscreen, even after sharpening, somewhat fuzzy and not nearly as sharp as I've seen people do with prosumer DSLR's. I'm sad....... Am I expecting too much?

I considered to purchase an Imacon because of the trouble I had with Nikon scan and my slides. With VueScan now I get almost the same results as with an Imacon. When I say almost I mean that the Imacon scans are just a tad better in dark areas, but the dust and scratch removal of the Nikon is second to none.
