just for fun ...

I have been using Salyut since a while. The older Salyut hasn't exactly the same noise than the latest Kiev-88. Noise varies a bit with the level of tension on the curtain too. On english internet there's a lot of memes about the Kiev-88. I have the feeling it's because these were sold in the US much more that the older models.

In the ocean of online comments about these cameras, one never knows where commentators speak from, ie. if they actually have a clue of the old mechanical cameras like the very first Hasselblad 1600f and 1000f, old Kowa, Bronica, etc. I

anyway, now that I am also playing with a recently acquired Bronica S2, I was curious to compare, as the old Bronicas are the other MF cameras often said to be the most noisy.

here I cock and fire a 1967 Salyut and then S2 at B, 1/60 and 1/1000:

I need to update it with a 1000f and a few others...

well the Hasselblad 1000f is the Salyut/Zenith-80/Kiev-80/Kiev-88

not mine, but one of the very few video of a 1000f :

In general it is not just the max. noise level (in dBA) that matters, but the frequency spectrum and its development during shutter-releae, transport, cocking etc.

There are definitely some difference between the Hasselblad 1000f and the Saylut/Kiev-88 (I have the 88 & 1000f, not the Saylut). the first curtain shutter brake uses a reciprocating clock drive train on the Saylut - you can hear it buzz on after the fist curtain opens - which is the same as my 88. The Hasselblad 1000f uses a pneumatic vane, which you can barely hear - it's a lot quieter and runs on a lot longer (a quiet whirr instead of a shorter buzz). Not sure why they changed it, and I had always wondered if they changed it at the beginning with the Saylut, or when they changed it to the 88 version with auto diaphragm, but antonio's post confirms this.

You can also turn the shutter select dial in both directions on the Saylut, you can only turn it in one direction on the 1000f.

Overall, the Hasselblad 1000f is smoother and quieter (winding and shutter release) then the Kiev.

Both bands were at one time listed in the Guiness Book of World Records as world's loudest band.

I haven't read the book in a long time. I wonder what is the World's record for loudest lens shutter? :D
