Interesting post I have two of her books one is At Twelve.

The SUPERB documentary about Mann, also titled "What Remains", has just been released on DVD. An incredibly compelling and poignant look at Mann, her family, marriage, and artistic process. Buy it if you can, you won't be disappointed.

It's available through Netflix... mine is arriving today!!

I saw that on TV here in Denmark. Fantastic!

but as far as I can tell, it is only released as "region 1", so I can't watch it on my dvd..

If I'm wrong, please let me know. I'd LOVE to have that DVD and use it for my students. That's actually a must.

I have always wanted to see the first documentary...PBS I think, called Blood Ties, The Life and Work of Sally Mann. I've never been able to track it down.

Going to order the latest now...

Great collection! David, you should put tags on your posts. It makes it easier to find other interesting interviews you've collected, e.g. Alec Soth (and others?).

I laughed out loud at the short video of her using her head to hold the camera in place while she hauled out the darkslide. I guess I should stop complaining about my crappy 8x10. She does ok with what she has. :D

Lori:

Wow - you are going to love this:

"Blood Ties" is featured in its entirety as an extra supplement to the DVD of "What Remains". So you get BOTH films for the price of the one DVD.

Ditto!! Bought the DVD "What Remains" last month. Absolutely wonderful to watch. Amazing insight and incredible photography. Worth the get.

Sally is one of the few true pure artists using photography, IMO. I recently purchased the DVD and thoroughly enjoyed it.

David, thanks for posting the short videos;so inspiring... Using your hand as shutter on a hundred years old camera to create art, wow. Such dedication and determonation leaves you speechless.
