I was lucky enough to receive an L grip for free this week, a very generous photographer was cleaning house and I guess this one didn't make it into the RZ kit sale. I've been looking for an L grip for a while, so excited to use it, only one problem...

The shutter does not fire via the L Grip button. Yes, it is switched to unlock, and yes, it is connected at the bottom. Can the contacts of that port go bad? Is it possible that I have a bad port or just a bad grip? I have no method for trouble shooting, as I don't have any accessories that use that port. Any ideas?

I believe that some of the accessories for the Mamiya 645 Pro/Pro Tl are intended to use that same port, so if you know anyone with that camera ......

Wiggle the connector in the port - sometimes they are a little loose. check continuity with a multimeter. These are fairly simple devices, I have taken them apart before (L-grip), should be easy to DIY fix.

I never did figure this out... Today I tried again and realized that when the dark slide is in, and I press the L grip shutter, the light comes on indicating that the dark slide is IN. That means, the shutter release signal is traveling to the camera. When I remove the dark slide, pressing the L grip release does nothing. Total mystery.

As you slowly press down on the grip button you should here two clicks, first click turns on metering dark slide indicator etc. Second click is the shutter release.

Looking at the connector and calling the pins 1 to 4 from left to right, pins 2 & 3 should have continuity on first click, second click adds continuity across pin 1 & 3.
So when fully pressed there is continuity across pins 1, 2 & 3.
(technically this may not be correct pin numbering, don't remember, but works for this illustration)

How to remove the flash hot shoe from the mamiya rz pro ii left hand grip.
