Rollei IR820 400 Infrared film.

I am going to try this film soon and would like to know if anyone has some developing times and dilutions for Rodinal or Tmax developers.

I have times worked out for the Efke version (previously Maco) but this Rollei film will obviously be different.

I would be interested in this as I have just ordered some Rollei IR820C too. I needed to make up an order to the minimum amount and thought some IR film would be something worth experimenting with.

I've run off a few rolls of the Rollei IR film but unfortuantely I haven't used either of these developers.

Dev time using the Rollei High Speed Dev is 5 minutes. Dev time for Ilfosol-S is 7.5 minutes both at 20C and using the Ilford agitation method. I don't know if you can use these times to extrapolate times for Rodinal or Tmax?

Maco/Rollei with Pyro PMK

I have a chart for this that works, ISO of about 12 which means ca. 5.6 at a 60th in bright sunlight, No. 25 filter, so if anyone is interested I can probably find the electronic version and forward it.

Have just experimented with digital infrared too, in a converted camera, heresy I know but shot in Egypt and Jordan for a couple of weeks almost exclusively with it and it was fun. Shot some Maco with the Noblex too....

I have just startet to use Rollei IR820 in R09 - two rolls.
And I get useable negatives with EI 12 and a 715nm filter. The dilution is 1+40 (Rodinal 1+50) and my develope time is 15 minutes @ 20 C. Continuous agitation the first 30 sec., then 10 sec. every minute. I'm still fintuning on the time, but you might use this as a start point.

If it has to be Tmax or Rodinal then so be it but just in case other devs might fit the bill have a look at Dave Miller's recent Forest Path in the Critique Gallery. He uses Precysol at EI 12 and very good it looks too.

I think the time and EI suggested in Rollei's development tabel (and datasheet) is a little optimistic!

I started with the 12 minutes and EI25 with a 715nm-filter, as suggested by MACO and Rollei. The result was very thin negatives. I did at lot of bracketing on the first film, so I could see the film was about two stops underexposed and therefore I ended up with 15 minutes and EI 12 on my second film.

So Peter, your best chance is to do a test roll, with a lot of bracketing.

Still, that was the Rollei IR400, not the IR820, and I developed it in the Rollei High Speed (RHS) developer. Haven't tried any other developer (yet). So, no useful suggestions from me, I'm afraid.

The bandwidth of this film is not so wide so you will depend on the local I.R. circumstances.

A RED filter will not work with this Rollei IR 820/400 film to get any 'wood' effect. An RG695nm, 715nm, Hoya 72R, Cokin (IR) 0007 or the Ilford SFX filter will do the job.

A RED filter will work on HIE (Kodak) and a dark red (665nm) also on Efke IR820C if their specs will be approx. the same as the Maco IR820C. Important for these films is that you load and unload in total darkness. The Rollei IR820/400 you can load and unload in subdue light.

Red25 is not strong enough! 89B or 88A IR-filters are recommended for the ROLLEI IR 820/400 film.

I have used a 29 deep red filter with the Efke (Maco) IR820 film and while it does not give a strong IR effect, it is quite nice and still very different to ordinary B&W film.

The Rollei film is 720nm, The Efke is 820nm.

Thanks for the info. on the film/filter combinations. The new Rollei infrared has thrown me in a state of infra-confusion! I will use the Cokin 007 for my initital exposure test.
As for the 4x5 version I hope that my camera (Wisner) is infrared friendly.

I found that the 29 with IR820 had just the beginnings of a wood effect on the plants and beautiful skin textures.

Just tested the Rollei Infrared. I used a Rollei sl66 with an 80mm lens. Development was with Rodinal 1:25 20C/68F 7.5 minutes; 30sc pre-soak.
Without a filter: EI 400
With Red 25: EI 64
With Cokin 007: EI 8
Nice stuff but, all things being equal, I prefer Kodak's HIE.

I used a 135 roll of Rollei IR 820/400 for testing, and ended up with (Voigtländer Bessa-L, 21mm Color-Skopar) setting the meter to 400 with a Heliopan 695 filter and overexposing about half a stop. That combination is just great!

But 7.5 minutes in Rodinal 1:25 is too much in my opinion - even 6 minutes gave more contrast than I like. And I prefer contrasty negatives!

Hey, sorry to be so long in replying but lost my digital enlarger to a flood and had to restore the system.

I have the chart now and converted it from an xls file so I'm not sure I can attach it here, will try.

Note that the mixture for the pyro is different and if you use the standard mixing ratios you'll get thin and nearly unusable negatives. I believe I've put the ratio at the top of the chart.
