It was the 150mm Schneider Tele-Xenar. A lovely lens. All of the Schneiders were really wonderful - a bit heavy (for today), but the 60mm was so special. Only one lens had a wee bit of softness on the edge, the 40mm , but it was quite a compact lens. the rest were part of a great 1990s lineup, and a significant update from the Zeiss lenses, mostly from a decade or two earlier (in design) if not older. The Mandelmann-Schneider-Rollei story is pretty interesting....
And yes, as you say, there are many 35mm lenses smaller, easier to use, and quite good.
I have that 150 Tele-Xenar and it is spectacular.
Interesting to hear about the 40mm Schneider. That's one I have been looking for but waiting for a nice copy. Not very common, but they seem to come in waves.
"Mandelmann-Schneider-Rollei" I don't know anything about this. I was surprised, when I picked up a Schneider lens in the factory box, to see both "Zeiss" and "Schneider" logos printed on the box along with "Rollei."
