Hello APUG,

(Aperture doesn't work sometimes, shutter doesn't work sometimes. Recently bought from local classifieds, feeling stupid)

I fell in love with the compact nature of the Rollei 35 series, and found a 35SE for a fair price on a local classifieds ad.

Bought it and have shot 3 rolls, only to find during the last roll that the aperture and shutter only work when they want to.

After finishing the last roll with a bunch of useless shots, I decided to open the back of the camera (film loading area) and see what was happening for myself.

Anyone familiar with the working of these cameras will know that the aperture ring does not physically move the aperture blades, but controls a separate mechanism which moves the blades...

The thing attached to the ring doesn't always "attach" to the other lever mechanism (which actually controls the blades), and I can't seem to figure out why it does or doesn't. It seems the mechanism that moves the lens out from the body is slightly wonky and it could be related.

The problem with the shutter is similar, in that it sometimes works, and sometimes doesn't, possibly depending on the readying of the lens. When cocking the shutter, the piece (sorry for my lack of knowledge of these parts) that is supposed to "release" the shutter sometimes doesn't make all the way to the top, and when this happens, the shutter doesn't open at all.

Anyhow, thanks for taking the time to read this long winded post, hopefully someone can help me out!

Sorry, but you better send your 35SE to a professional. What kind of battery have you used, or did you have a genuine mercury cell?

Yeah, I'm going to the shop tomorrow, just thought I would ask. It has now been brought to my attention that I can't even open the battery compartment. I was too trustworthy in this sale, I might have bought a total dud.
