Roll Call: 11 x 14 and Larger

An 8 x 20 Cahnam, 36" bellows.

Holders: 1 olde tyme Corona, 2 Wisner holders (klunky, heavy, blunderbuss things), and 1 homemade holder (5 more in the works).

An armada of glass: 210 Super Symmar XL, 355mm G-Claron, 450 Nikor, 600mm Fuji, 780 Apo-Ronar, and a 1200 mm Tele-Nikor. I've even got an 18" f6 Wollensack Versar Portrait that I haven't tried yet. (That blasted camera is addictive...)

I shoot mostly PhotoWarehouse 400 (Ilford HP5).

I've recently completed an adapter to fit a 10x22" Aristo V-54 cold light onto the camera, converting it into a horizontal enlarger. A 19" Artar lets me make 24 x 60 enlargements that are amazingly sharp.

That camera is addictive...

2. Alternative processes? when I started using the cameras I was printing in Platinum/Palladium. Now I just contact print on silver based papers. Some on Azo, but most are on other papers.

3. other-------- I have to admit that I haven't really liked the 11x14 format. I have only shoot with it a few times in the field, but I'd rather shoot 8x10 as it much easier to work with and the prints are not much smaller. So the 11x14 has only been used in the studio a few times in the recent years.

The 8x20 is a different story. Its a pain to carry around, expensive to shoot, and just hard to work with sometimes (like last week in the winds in Kansaas/Nebraska), but I love the format. For me, there only a few things in life better then seeing an nice 8x20 negative hanging to dry after it was just processed. It makes me forget any difficulties of working with the format everytime.

Oh dear, this will have the fellows in white coats at the ready. Korona with 10X12 and 11X14 backs. Soon to be sold when Jim Chinn finishes my new camera that will do the same sizes. Jim is also building 5X14 adapters and holders for 5" roll film pano's. 11X14 Century adapted for Deardorff 6" boards is my main user 11X14 though. Nice old camera that. 7X17 and 12X20 Folmer & Schwing's. 8X20 Korona. Each of the banquets has 4 holders. Lenses: most used is the 355 G-Claron. 2nd is the 450 Fujinon-C. 3rd is the 305 G-Claron. 7X17 has an odd board and has 305 Dagor for it's main lens. 270 G-Claron also used on 717 but little room for moves (like zero). Have a big 600mm Voigtlander APO Skopar and 16X20 Protar IV for the 1220. 10X12 Protar IV & V for the 1012, 1114, 717 cameras. Then there are the funky lenses like ancient RR's in double pumper shutters and barrels etc. that the large cameras are always test beds for. This sounds like overkill and I suppose it is but I've been building the system that I plan to use for my remaining days. Pt / Pd is the driver and I've done some successful prints with that but was shocked the other day to admit that it's been 5 years since I've done any while the new darkroom is getting built. PT /PD is also the driver for using ortho films. ASA 3 and long contrast index for a full range of tones on pt/pd. Still much work to do. So many combinations...so little time.

I have a 7x17 Folmer&Schwing. Still waiting to get a film holder (budgetary constraints)

mounted a 14" Kodak 6.3 lens on it and it covers it well.

so I will soon get to burn some of the 7x17 Efke PL100 ....

I use a Wisner 11x14 currently.

My two favorite lenses are the FUJI 600mm f12, and a Goerz 360 process lens, a 'Blue Dot'. I also am using the Efke 100 film; it seems like a lot of us are.

I recently received one of Dick Phillips 11x14 Eplorer's, I'm working with a Nikon 450M until I can locate a 355 G Claron to keep it company. I use a Majestic tripod head attached to a Berlabach set of legs. Sandy King sold me the only two sets of S&S film holders I own (must make more money, must buy more holders) I just used the last of my second box of Photo Ware House Ultrafine, This is the only film I have used in this format so far.
I'm an FNG in ULF land so I have yet to start printing any of these fine negatives I have produced thus far....it's kill'n me.

Your only a FNG when others are worried that your not going to be around long enough. No fear with this stuff... it is addictive. Korona 12x20, two beater Korona holders and 14" & 19" process lenses.

7x17 Korona - very beautiful wood. Functions perfectly. Nearly a dozen film holders (including two brand new walnut 'beauts in a box).

we just looked at you website. There are some amazing images there (even if I haven't adjusted my monitor for optimal viewing). The 7x17 format is very appealing, it makes us nearly overcome our hesitation to do anything beyong roll film sized stuff. But I bet you need cudos for this game - and a fabulous darkroom as well. The lure of these old printing techniques does not escape us either...

Ah well, as soon as we win the lottery (and I'm still confident this will happen one day), we can start to venture along this avenue as well. For now, we will just look wistfully at the products of your Wisner, as that is (we assume) the camera you're using for the 7x17 prints.

And keep on making these great shots...for the sake of mankind and for ours in particular ;-)

Thank you for your very kind words. I haven't won the lottery yet either, but I am able to support my work through print sales and teaching. One of the nice things about the 'old processes' is that you really don't need much of a darkroom, so don't let that dissuade you. I currently use a Wisner for 7x17, but many of the images on my website were made with Korona 7x17 cameras. I went through 2 of those (the first was stolen ) before I switched to the Wisner in 1999.

If you need someone to come to the Netherlands to teach platinum printing, let me know!

I'll think of that suggestion. Keep it in the back of my mind, mull it over a bit and maybe I'll find an organisation or institute willing to pay for it...an art school maybe? (Unless of course I win the lottery).

We have a good friend who teaches art photography (Gurski stuff etc), and he's a bit hmmhmm when we say anything to him about photography (he knows best, yeah right), but if we drop the hint carefully, he might bite...He did mention lately that he felt like going back to the darkroom when seeing such nice 'silver gelatins' in a show somewhere on his frequent travels (talking luxury life here).
