Very sad news. Roger and Francis have been a large presence in the film community for decades and were always accessible and enthusiastic.

I hope both understand the gratitude and affection many feel for them and their cheerful work.

I wish them both peace and satisfaction in the coming days; knowing that their work is appreciated and valued

I have been reading his works, and learning the craft from him, for decades. He has always inspired me. Thank you, Roger.

Frances was battling cancer herself only about a year ago. It seems terribly unfair that she should fight so hard only to lose Roger afterwards.

I have immense admiration for their work but, more so, for their generosity. Sure, they sold information through their books and articles but I never saw Roger hesitate to give it freely to anyone who asked. He has contributed so much to so many.

I hope for peace and comfort for both of them in the days ahead.

You have probably expressed the feelings most of us have the best way.

Thank you very, very much Roger for all what you have done for the art of photography and the photographers.
Our thoughts are with you and Francis.

I remember him from the time I entered Apug. I think it even was him who helped me get a membership (back then already some software bug was around at Apug). Anyway, over the years we exchanged PMs, but he retracted from Apug. And sad enough we never met in real life though he was quite near.

Roger and Francis have contributed over many decades with books, articles, and on APUG. I am sad to hear the news.

RFF member Dave Lackey got word from Frances today that Roger passed yesterday. A great loss to the photographic community.

R.I.P. Roger Hicks. Best of luck in your travels.

Such very sad news. Roger was always a postive person and helpful. I have some of his pro photo series books and will look through them again tonight.
My sincere condolences to Frances and his family and friends.

I’ve never spoken to the man but I have one of his books “The Black & White Handbook”. It was the first photography book that I’ve opened.

R.I.P Mr. Hicks

I hope, he and Ansel have a chance to work together in the great, big darkroom in the sky
RIP Roger.

Very sad to hear, he was arguably one of the best (certainly most easily understood) technical writers on analogue photography. He made what could seem quite challenging processes and techniques much less intimidating while simultaneously enhancing your understanding of how they worked - and that is no mean feat.

I’m going to miss him. He put out lots of really great information and I love reading pretty much anything he writes. Thoughts to Frances and the rest of his closer circle.

This just means us younger guys need to really get serious about carrying the analog mantle the way Roger has, because if we don’t, who will?

This is sad news. We have lost a wonderful member of our community and a wonderful writer.
I for one am very glad that Francis and Roger were so willing to share what they knew. I have learned much from their writing and am sure I will continue to learn.
Rest in Peace Roger. I sincerely hope that Francis is receiving the support she will need at this point in her life.

Roger Hicks has been at the center of my photographic exploration since I was a newly married man 32 years ago. I read his stuff in many places including the Shutterbug magazine, books, and articles in other publications. To me Roger (and Francis) Hicks are black and white photography... along with Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, and the Weston sons.

Rest in peace, Roger Hicks!

Peace and love to you, Francis.

OMG, this has really hit home. I'm a long time subscriber to Amateur Photographer and Roger's always been there in the inside back page. I might not always have agreed with, or even understood, some of the photos he chose for critique, but to me he was a part of the furniture in the magazine and it will be a very strange and sad place without his column at the end of each issue.

I will only have positive memories of his giving nature and patience. One of the truly "Good Guys" of the craft.

Like many other members, Roger and Francis' writings formed an important part of my photographic youth and development, both in their own books and through the pages of Amateur Photographer.

RIP Roger and my thoughts and best wishes go to Francis and their wider family.
