(I don't know if this is the correct forum in which to post, but it's seems the closest.. Anyway, definitely ANALOG!).

I just wanted to commemorate the anniversary of the passing of my friend and writing partner, Roger Hicks, April 7, 2019.

My other friend, his widow and writing partner, Frances Schultz, is living alone in a big ancient house in the middle of France that she and Roger moved to years ago, and if you're so inclined to send her your good wishes or remembrances of Roger, I think it would be really great. Her email address is already pretty public: roger.hicks@wanadoo.fr

(Please be mindful of the fact that Frances has a condition that causes her to tremble violently and therefore has trouble writing long emails .. therefore, a short message to her that doesn't necessarily require a response would be ideal!)

Thanks and please take care of yourselves during this scary coronavirus pandemic.

Best,

Christopher

Roger contributed to photography, photography education and to APUG. I missed his passing. Best wishes to Frances.

That's sad news-I always enjoyed reading Roger's sensible, no nonsense advice on photography.

I always enjoyed Roger’s contributions here and our discussions.

I believe there is a memorial thread for him from the time of his passing in the “In Memoriam” subforum of “The Lounge.” Eventually this thread may move over there.

Thanks, David. I didn't see that sub-forum when I first posted this.

By the way, having served in the photo equipment industry for awhile, it upsets me that there is no industry-wide publication [that I'm aware of] which posts the announcements of important and helpful actors in the field who have passed away.

A particular 'sour grapes' story comes to mind about the passing of Charlie Satter, the ebullient photo distributor whom, among many other brands, brought Forte paper to the U.S. in a big way. Charlie had a huge personality; on this count I think he would've had few equals in Hollywood in its heyday (he even looked a bit like Billy Wilder)!

When I called him, one October evening, to wish him happy birthday and asked how he was, he loudly replied —almost, I'd say, in a comical way, "I'm dying!. Who told you? (I hadn't known). Charlie had me smiling through my tears. Incredible guy.

After he died, I contacted the publisher of a photo magazine I had been writing freelance for at the time (which, mercifully, shall remain un-named). Mind you; this was a magazine in which Charlie's company, Satter-Omega, advertised regularly. However, when I asked this publisher if he could print a small obit for Charlie, he said, "Why? These guys are dropping like flies right now, anyway" (I was so shocked and disgusted that I wrote the quote down)

Even after I explained to this publisher that Charlie had been a friend of mine and had supported the magazine, he didn't budge (there are words for people like this, but let's stay civil).

Anyway, the reason for my "Charlie story", David, is to underline how much I appreciate the fact that photrio.com provides a place for these announcements. These players in our industry —not just the photo writers, photographic scientists and engineers or photographers, but the commercial folks too— from George Eastman to Steve Jobs— are integral to what we photographers do and what we can and can't use to express ourselves. So, again, thank you. And I hope to heck they'll still be seen 50 and 100 years from now!

Thanks Christopher. The “In memoriam” subforum is particularly for people who were members of the forum, as Roger so generously was, but other obits may and often do appear in subforums like “photographers” and “Industry News,” say for someone who is more known as a manufacturer, chemist, distributor, dealer, photo writer, or repair technician than as a photographer per se.
