Rodinol...what's the deal?

I use it, but I can't pronounce it.I can think of several ways of uttering the magic incantation, but which is correct? "Rodd-inn-al" "Road-een-al" "Rodd-een-al" "Road-inn-al" or any others? I can even vary the stressed syllable. Any offers?

Haha, I like it. I can tell you that I pronounce it as "Road-in-nall" -Grant

I checked with Agfa a little while back and they don't do any Rodinal T-shirts etc. Mmmmmmm maybe we should do what they don't and get our own appreciation ones out there

In german it´s Rho (like in Rose) -Dih (like in "the") -Nahl (with a short "l".

TP, no, they don´t have Rodinal-shorts, but they have some with the Agfa-scripture on the left chest side and were sold to the employee at 3Euro per shirt.

Ok, if we do our own, let´s make a sample and put that in a file so that everyone can print it out on these iron-on films to transfer them on a plain standard shirt... saving the hassle to ship them throughout the world.

Yep I'm all that and have me trasfer paper at the ready (oooops errrrm it's for my son's use honest). Maybe if everyone with a example of the old ads posts we could see which we all like

Yeah, that´s the one I have somewhere around. But the file is too small to be printed that large, it might be enough for a small patch on the chest or on the shoulder.

On the other hand - remember that scan Sean uploaded here, the label from the Agfa paper box? Spline did a very good job at interpolating and scaling it - it´s good with graphical text.

Reverting back to the actual developer, I just dug out a copy of "Silverprint" magazine, issue 1, spring 1991 (Issue 2 was called "Ag") which contains an article by Martin Reed entitles "A Hundred years of Rodinal". Of particular interest was a set of 50x (approx) enlargements of Agfapan 100 developed in 1 Rodinal, 2 Ultrafin, 3 Rodinal added to a hydroquinone developer, 4 Rodinal plus sulphite and finally 5 T-Max.

1 showed the most grain, but also the most fine detail.

YEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It prints well up to 8"x10" (appropriate) and has that real 1900's look about it

Personally, I disagree with that statement. APX100 in Rodinal (any dilution) is awesome. I even like the look of HP5+ in Rodinal. I just tried JandC 100 (120 size) in Rodinal (both 1:25 and 1:50) and it looks great too. -Grant

What do you base that on Hans? I've developed Tri-X, Tmax-100, Pan-F, and a couple infra-red films in Rodinal, 35 mm size and 120 size. I never saw anything detrimental in using it, unless one has an aversion to some grain. But who was it that declared grain was bad?

Why not? It gives great sharpness...

Of course the grain is evident, but that is the charming side of Rodinal for me.

I use it for all my slow films (under 200 and Tri-X @ 320) in 35 mm.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder ... and from iso 25 to 3200 Rodinal is what I be holding. It's beautiful to my eyes!!

How are you running the Acros? I haven't liked my Rodinal+Acros results, it's a prime reason why I keep Xtol around (which looks GREAT w/Acros, imo).

Personally, I'm with Gibson & Salgado and go for the Tri-X

In a side by side study where we secretly replaced famous fotographers Rodinal with W2D2+. 9 out of 10 famous fotographers thought the W2D2+ was significantly better in roll film formats.

Well, not really, but I prefer W2D2+ and my homebrew Buffaloe 777 developers for 135, 127, and 120 film formats. Rodinal is wonderful on 2x3, 3x4, and 4x5 Classic200. It is cheap, easy to use, and has great midtones. It does seem to fall asleep in the shadows. Maybe it's made in some Mediterranian country?

Rodinal has poor efficiency (the speed achieved is low, meaning more exposure must be given) and severe graininess (because of the high alkalyinity). Paterson Acutol provides better shadow detail, better sharpness, and finer grain. There is really no comparison.
