Looks to be good ole market forces and fear is abounding right now! LOL

More power to him, if the market will pay it, then go for it, myself think the buyers are the ones being dumb on this one!

It's worth more.

You can't develop film real well in light, sweet crude. But you can't run your car on Rodinal. Of course, I have a diesel so it might actually burn Rodinal well enough.

I love ebay. Cheapest form of entertainment around.

Good heavens! I have a partially full bottle--only used an ounce or two. Anyone who wants it for $50 can have it. Is that a steal or what?

I just stopped in to post the same auction (late, as usual). I think we may be seeing bids by people who don't understand eBay's "Dutch" auction format. They may not realize that their bid is "per bottle". If I'm wrong, I'm going to post a few auctions and fatten up the kids' college funds.

The thing is, it isn't real until someone actually buys a bottle at that price. Heck, I could list a bottle for $10,000 if I wanted. However, if that number available drops from the current number of five, or if someone knows that it was once higher than five and at least one has sold, than this is indeed a bad sign.

They will sell, because there are bidders, and the auction hasn't ended yet. The bidders name their price and the number of bottles they want, and when the auction is over, the highest bidder gets the number of bottles they bid on at their bid per bottle, and the next bidder gets any remaining bottles at their top price, and so on down the line. Right now there are two winning bidders at $65/bottle.

Women are bidding these up....

they have discovered that a little rodinal behind the ears,
an evening gown,
and a candle or two, has a more profound effect on certain males,
yes even more so than " the smell of fixer in the morning"

The seller is running an auction, not a fixed price sale, and has multiple bids on all five bottles. The number won't drop from five, because people can still bid. And the price may go higher.

I still think some of the bidders don't realize they're bidding a "per bottle" amount.

Eau de p-aminophenol.

Maybe I should go buy the few dozen bottles the store has here

I called Freestyle and asked about the chance of them getting any more, just to lay it to rest. They say they're working on a deal that probably won't pan out, but that they're also working on the idea of having a clone made for them. Aristadinal?

I guess "necessity" really is "the mother of invention"

I saw this auction too. I was frantic to get some original Agfa Rodinal before it disappeared completely, so naturally I checked eBay. I would sure love to get some, albeit not at such exorbitant prices!

So I did some research, figuring that availability of remaining stock would be greater in Europe then in the US, seeing as production is more or less "local" out there. I hit google pretty hard, sent out about a dozen emails, and low-and-behold, 2 days later, I've got an order on it's way for (12) 500ml bottles! woohoo!

I've also asked the seller to reserve an additional 12 bottles, pending the incident-free arrival of the current order - though I've yet to get confirmation on that reservation. All in all, I paid about US $14.00 p/bottle - that puts the price squarely at 1.5x what I would've paid at B&H, but a far cry from the gouging that's obviously rampant.

I got the impression that this supplier still has some stock left over, though I dont' know quite how much. I'll be asking though, and if there is more Rodi to be had, I'll be glad to post the source.

What gouging? The seller runs an auction, people bid what they're willing to pay. If this were food or heating oil or some other necessity in short supply, it would be different, but this product even has substitutes readily available.

Hope the folks at Photographers' Formulary see this. It might give them a little more incentive to hurry up and get their Rodinal clone out.

I can make a clone for less than $5 /liter. Maybe the bidders are after the bottle, as a future ancient history museum piece. I cannot see paying that much for the functionality. There must be some other -ity involved.
