Alan - great example! That's one reason I use dilute Rodinal. I love what it does to the midtones and perceived sharpness. To me it works wonderfully, particularly since I've started using a pinhole camera a lot. I need all the help I can get in the sharpness department.
Michel - it's pretty obvious that you're going for something extreme when you develop your negs, but I don't understand your comment on Rodinal being harsh and 'bullet proof'. But I guess you use what you like. Same with me. The softness of most of my negs need that little extra kick that Rodinal gives me. I've grown to like HC-110 also lately. It's a great and versatile developer. I look forward to the day you post results here of your findings.

Alan.

I kind of figured that. On the few rolls of film that I developed with Rodinal there was an edge effect. I am willing to chance it and loose it in this instance though.

Mackie lines aka edge effects ...

Adjacency effects. An article at www.unblinkingeye.com
dealing with Rodinal explains their generation as Rodinal
develops the film. Apparently agitation is NOT a factor
though one source recommends no more than 10
seconds each minute.

My off-the-top-of-my-head evaluation; the developing
agent in Rodinal is more sensitive to the local build up
of bromide than even metol. It may also be more
sensitive to local decreases in ph. Dan

Thomas.

I've tried HC-110 in the past and did not care for it. In fact I used it before trying Rodinal and Xtol, but I did get one good print from it that hung in an exhibition.

Re the article on Rodinal at unblinkingeye.com, it is true that edge effects can sometimes be seen with vigorous agitation.R. Henry in 'Controls in Black and White Photography' obtained them (p214,p240) with a rotary machine (p30).Concentration gradients of developer and reaction products cause them to diffuse laterally through the EMULSION across exposed/unexposed edges and edge effects are the end result.
However, if there is a static layer of liquid above the exposed/unexposed edges, and only if it is static, concentration gradients can exist in the LIQUID too and IMO edge effects are increased by minimal agitation or stand development.

as my 11 year old would say...........OMG!
i think i was lost by the 3rd or 4th post on this thread. i also realized that i need to purchase additional storage containers. It appears I may need to break away from the old D-76 and try something different although i do know what to expect when i develop my negs. I used to use Rodinal about 20 years ago, i will have to try again as well as HC-110.
thanks to all to such an informative & interesting thread!!

For you next experiment...

... Xtol, 1:3 or 1:4 AND Rodinal 1:100 in the same tank at the same time.

You just might like it. :D
