The Schneider version is somewhat easier to find, the 150mm APO-Componon HM. I had to “settle” for that one since the APO-Rodagon-N was impossible to find. I have the N versions of the 50mm and 80mm and wanted the Rodenstock to complete the trio. I’ve been very happy with the Schneider 150mm. Just my two cents. Good luck with the hunt!

The Schneider version is somewhat easier to find, the 150mm APO-Componon HM. I had to “settle” for that one since the APO-Rodagon-N was impossible to find. You can also consider a Apo-Rodagon 1:4,8 f=180mm. Or a Sinaron digital 1:4,8 f=180mm That is the same optic as the first one.

PB ~ there are two versions of this lens - just sharing information to expand your search.

The version which you have linked, is the more familiar outstanding(ly expensive grail optic) for LF photographers using 5x4.

Rodenstock also made a repro version of the 150/4 Apo-Rodagon N without an aperture mechanism and lock. These were more abundant than the huge outlay for the original 150/4.

The latter is the one I use: it has a single optimised f8 aperture disc for insertion. This is typical of repro lenses and photographers less familiar with these repro lenses, let these lenses slide pass without notice. The optical formula and design is otherwise identical.

Good luck in your search - it's the only LF enlarger lens I use. I have a few Apo-Sinaron Digitar lenses from a Sinar P3 lying around unused - these also double up well as optical process lenses (the digital aperture control mechanism isn't though).

since we are only printing BW at the moment.
who knows I’m lucky and run in to one in time

I love the Repro version - its perfectly circular solo f8 Waterhouse aperture stop, is different from Rodenstock's hex shaped apertures. The disadvantage however is that even 20'24 inch printing can run up 4second max enlargement times!

Your Componon-S is fine. I throw in the 135/5.6 version for the students (don't feel comfortable letting them handle the Rodenstock 150/4 ). The Apo-Rodagon N excels for colour printing and large print size output and fast operation (you can focus at f8 and print at f8). If you are printing smaller than 12x8inch its output in black and white is barely distinguishable from the budget Componon S line.
