ring flash compatability

is a ring flash like a metz or marumi best used on a lens without a rotating front element, or can they be used with them? my 35-70 has a good macro mode (disregard the working distance) the macro is at 35mm.

The Sunpak ring flash head for my 622 has a rotating mounting ring, so it will stay in the same position if the filter mount rotates.
