Although being a recent member of APUG, I'd be very interested in participating in the exchange.

Not only are brand-spanking new APUG members very welcome, it's also unnecessary to ask if participants are willing to send to your remote-from-the-continental-US location. One of the agreed expectations of all participants is that regardless of the location of the recipient of your photography, you agree to send it there -- even if your recipient is in Timbuktu or Operation Deep Freeze.

If you're in the exchange for enough cycles, I would expect pseudorandomization would ensure that no individual has to pay a disproportionate amount of postage in the, uh, long haul.

This Blind Exchange is wholly separate from any existing gallery, although at some point I was planning on asking if we wanted to either use an existing gallery or start up a new one to share the faint digital shadows of what we exchange with the rest of the participants after our designated recipient has already received it.

castilg,
All your questions should be answered by reading the very first message in this thread from beginning to end. Any questions after that, feel free to either PM me or ask in this thread. This is an exchange of actual photographic products you can hold in your hand, such as prints, proofs, negs, slides, etc. This particular exchange is not one where someone uploads an image and we all talk about it afterward.

thanks

You've already done it. Just drop a line into the thread. Every 2-3 days, I'll collect the new names and shoot each new interested party a copy of the expectations of the exchange as well as a request for their mailing and E-Mail addresses. If the expectations are suitable to you, send me your address by reply PM and you're in. I will either periodically post an updated participant status list or update the one at the top of the thread, depending on whether Sean (sysadmin) finds a way for me to get around the default edit timeout on messages.

Strictly speaking, though, this is a photography exchange. Any analog photography product is welcome, including but not limited to negatives, minilab prints, alt process prints, contact sheets, slides, etc.

I noticed you just sent me a PM. I'll send you a query when I do my next round of queries. Probably tonight or tomorrow sometime.

Cheers & welcome,

-KwM-

(btw -- the aforementioned expectations are the same text as in the first message of this thread.)

Although it's probably difficult and certainly unfair to do, it would probably make things a lot easier if when you send me your address, you use the regular ASCII character set rather than extended characters, superscript, subscript, etc. When I send out the addresses for recipients, I'll be using the PM I was sent, and it's not entirely certain that extended characters will display the same on all computers/typefaces/operating system/browser combinations.

cheers,

-KwM-

I guess a workaround, given the fact that there's an unpredictable quality
of character internationalization from machine to machine, is to go ahead and give the address with internationalized characters, then give a brief description of how you typed them, then perhaps you could attach a portion of a screen dump, showing how it looks on your screen, or neatly print out your address and either scan or digicam shoot it and attach a JPEG good enough to print out and use as a mailing label.

(There doesn't appear to be a way to attach a file to a PM, but in "enhanced mode" there is an "insert image" feature)

Yep - my neighbours in Sæbøvåg have enough problems. Worst of aøø is a young woman there, named Åse Æsøy...

An "international" transliteration of "Sæbøvåg" would be "Saeboevaag". Even uglier

We don't have a problem with internationalised characters but we do use lots of them sometimes. Glad I don't live in the small place in the South island of New Zealand called "Tetaumatawhakatangihangakoauaotamateaurehaeaturipukapihimaungahoronuku pokaiwhenuaakitanarahu"
(just wouldn't work in the postcard exchange).

Yikes! I'm viewing these on a Mac with OS X 10.2.8 with, I believe, all the internationalization characters sets installed, and I'm using Firefox 1.01 as my browser. Even so, I've run into one address someone PMed me where what they were describing wasn't exactly what I saw on my screen.

The way I'm going to convey the addresses to everyone is to just forward them the PM in which the address was conveyed to me. I know some folks in the US who just opt not to install ANY of the internationalized character sets to save space when they're installing their OS. If someone like that running Win95 or Win98 were to display that address in not-anywhere-near-a-current-browser I have no idea if what would be displayed on their screen would resemble something sufficient to reach our friends outside the US.

Of course, I don't want to come off sound like one of those "If english was good enuf for God to write the bible in, it's good enough for me" yahoos. Hopefully, I've presented adequate alternatives for conveying international addresses that everyone, regardless of the install state of the operating system or quality of their browser, will be able to easily know to where they should send their photography.

"The Print Exchange Gallery" not = "The Blind Exchange"

It would probably be good to mention at this point that the gallery titled "The Print Exchange Gallery" is not directly associated with the blind exchange. Two different things.

As close as I can tell (haven't spent a lot of time reading the thread) the idea behind the print exchange gallery is that folks post an image of a print they'd like to trade with another member, so members can shop around for someone with whom they would like to exchange prints.

The idea beind the blind exchange is that each person is given the name of someone randomly chosen from the list of participants. They would then send that person one analog photography "product", be it a print, contact sheet, slide or negative.

To find out more about The Print Exchange Gallery, visit this (there was a url link here which no longer exists).

Please count me in. I've PM'd my details already but I did that without joining this string first. Let me know if you want me to send them again or whatever. I'm looking forward to doing my first exchange.
