I ordered a box of 8x10 from B&H tonight. I get excellent results from the MGIV RC, this looks quite a bit better.

Seems like it has amazing toning abilities for RC
I do a lot of toning of RC papers. While the old Ilford MGIV RC has a fairly subdued response to a number of toners - selenium in particular - other RC papers are quite responsive.
The Oriental RC paper tones quite well.
As Tim Rudman says in his Toning book, it is a myth that RC papers don't tone.
I am, however, looking forward to the new paper, and its response to toners is part of that.

I certainly agree with the myth thing. I tone every print I make. With the current MGIV paper I use KRST 1+3. And as Matt has mentioned it isn't a spectacular response. But it definitely adds dimension and improved D max. I ordered the glossy, I have an Ilford dryer and the gloss is spectacular. I print fiber a lot, but anymore I do a lot of work on RC,

I suspect with the new paper I will need to dilute the Se. Rudman's selenium / gold combination toning looks nice. I use Se followed by Kodak Blue toner (Gold) looks awesome. The RC paper will make the seemingly endless washing much easier.

Touche`....... I knew i would be sorry for saying that.

What i SHOULD have said -
"I have only tried toning with Ilford MG IV in Pearl and Gloss.
The results were not near as nice as when i toned any brand of Fiber MG"

I'm really happy that the paper exposes and tones very similarly to the FB Classic papers. Opens the door to working on prints with RC and then going to fiber for the final print. Right now I don't find it helpful to work this way with MGIV RC paper as it's just too different from the new fiber papers.

Just ordered a box of 8x10 from B&H to try out. It sure looks promising...

I think it's actually the 9th generation of Multigrade, there were 4 older versions which used the the filtration the other way around increased Yellow increased contrast and later they added Magenta lowered it, The first version was delayed because of the outbreak of WWII.

First generation was delayed and introduced in 1940, DuPont Variagram came out slightly earlier and was made under license from Ilford, teh two companies had close ties at the time.
Second generation not known possible wartime for Military use
Third generation 1953 used 3 yellow filters
Fourth generation introduced in 1959 went out of production 1969, five different filters Yellow to Magenta.

All these versions were Fibre based papers. Multigrade was re-introduced as a Resin coated paper in 1978 with the sensitisers switched so now Yellow is the soft filtration and Magenta the Contrast. Multigrade 5 is the fifth generation of RC Multigrade.

...Multigrade 5...
Ever since the "speculation" and leak began, this has been how folks referred to HARMAN's new Ilford paper. HARMAN itself reminds us that this is "the 5th generation" of its MULTIGRADE RC paper. However, correct nomenclature is "MULTIGRADE RC DEXLUXE." There's no "5" or "V" in the name.

I wonder how the labels on the box ends appear.

Yes - but the labels on the current and earlier versions of the paper put all the interesting stuff on the parts of the label that wrap over the end on to the back.
Things like "MG4RC44M"

Looks like they are using the same numbers 1, 25, 44, it's M 190g/sq.m. I got this from the 10 24 2019 Ilford updated datasheet. Not sure when it will be in the 250g weight.

Yeah, I expect the labels will say MGRC1M, etc. But we'll know soon enough.

I think it is a nice video and a great review by checking the Ilford claims. And I am also intrigued by the print sample pack that came along with the box she got. Wondering whether Ilford will sell those 3 print sample packs separately.

100% agree with you here! I usually work out my dodging/burning and split-grade plan on RC paper first, then try to translate to FB paper for my final prints. The differences between the current RC and FB papers can make this a challenge. Plus the cost difference and extended washing times for FB are always a factor..Kudos to Ilford for introducing this new paper.

If it’s a good as MG fibre and tones as well as MG fibre it may tempt me to ditch fibre as I’m sick of the long washing times for fibre

If Ilford sold sample packs of their papers I'd be interested in buying. If nothing else, I'd have correctly processed prints from correctly exposed and developed negs to set the bar for me.

A step forward certainly. I fear we cannot conceive of how precious this stuff called water might be by the time our small grandchildren are even middle-aged if we carry on as we are

Surely this emulsion technology will eventually be extended to fibre base paper instead of just resin coat. I'll buy it when that happens.

I just got the official price list with the new part numbers and stuff from Roberts. I'll be putting in an order in the next week or two, so if anybody wants anything, PM me and we can work something out that is beneficial for both of us. This isn't limited to just paper.

Didn't that happen quite a while ago when Multigrade IV fibre paper became Multigrade FB classic, or did they change the name only?
