I received my Reveni Labs light meter MK2 yesterday and there are major improvements over the original version. First is the battery life issue has been addressed. The LR44's have been replaced with a USB rechargeable NiMH cell which provides plenty of power to run the OLED screen while providing a much longer run time. The meter is only slightly larger tan the original and the display offers more information. There is a continuous reading mode as well as the press and read. ISO from 1 to 12,800, F stops from .07 to 1K and speeds from 1 hour to 1/8000th. It offers a lot in a small package and I'm looking forward to putting it to use!

Will it hold for a year? I haven't used other Reveni meters but my concern is that usually rechargeable batteries are used for applications where charging happens on a daily to weekly frequency, which is definitely not acceptable for a light meter.

I don't know. It arrived yesterday and it's one of the first production models. Guess we'll have to wait until next January to find out.

Increasing the battery life will make a big difference and increase the market base.

It had a full charge yesterday. I had the display set to 30 seconds before turning off and tested the meter in a number of lighting situations. I would estimate between a half hour and forty five minutes of the OLED screen being in constant use, the power level was down to about sixty percent. Plugged it in and within ten minutes it was back to a full charge. In normal use, the charge should last for several days or more of regular metering. Now that the meter is set up, I adjusted the display to only be on for 10 seconds, that should extend battery life. It matches the reflective mode of my Sekonic 308X, weighs next to nothing and for me, it a meter for when I don't want to carry a meter.

The problem with the original design is that the battery would drain even when the screen was off and the meter not in use. I don't use the meter frequently, but when I did, it was often dead and needed new batteries. A rechargeable battery doesn't really solve this issue if it still drains when not being used. It really needs to switch off the circuit completely. Maybe this new version does that, but if it does, then I'd probably rather just have a regular LR44 battery that I could switch out immediately. I hate to wait to charge things up when I need them to work now. A readily replaceable and readily available rechargeable battery would be fine, however.

Besides the battery drain issue on the original model, I also had problems with the tiny battery "tray". The wings that hold the battery were too flexible, and the battery would get stuck in the unit when I pulled the tray out. I was pulling the tray out to avoid the battery drain, but then the battery gets stuck. This requires disassembly of the covers, and some careful prying of the battery. A real pain in the rear. I've now bent the two contact tangs to put less pressure on the battery, so it comes out more easily with the tray. I hope this doesn't cause contact issues now. I've already had to adjust it again for that.

I was a big fan of these when I first got it, because the size was perfect, and the display was excellent. The battery drain and weak battery tray have made me want to use something else. I hope this new design is the answer, but I need to see if the battery drain issue is truly addressed, or if it's just another bandaid over the same mess.

No battery tray but there is a micro USB charging port on the side. Unlike most meters that use LED's, the OLED screen draws a lot of power. Like I mentioned, after the set up, a few changes to persevere battery life when in use. With this being such anew product, it it'll be several weeks before I know if the battery drain is still problematic.

I went to the Reveni Labs site and found the manual for the MK2 version. Here is the link Reveni Labs Light Meter MK2 manual

I was VERY disappointed that they made no mention of the well known issues with the original version, and didn't have any explanation about how the new version addressed them. A rechargeable battery doesn't solve anything if the fundamental electronic design hasn't changed. In fact, a non-replaceable battery is a backwards step in my opinion.
