I'm not a collector but I just got this because it's so darn interesting. 550 pictures of cameras over 280 pages. It would be fun to have a dedicated shelf of some of these. Unfortunately, having moved around the country over the years, I've "decluttered" some old film cameras and now I wish I'd kept them! 😭

I felt the same way when I picked up this similar book a few years ago.

Years ago I discarded a Brownie box camera from the 1930s, a folding Autographic from the 1920s, a Rolleiflex, and a Nikon F among others. I'm still kicking myself.🙄

I'm wary about books like Retro Cameras, the works of Todd Gustavson, and Bellamy Hunt's (aka "Japan Camera Hunter") Film Camera Zen. lest they give me ideas!

The real question is if one wants a functional collection, or a non-working display only collection. Some of the military/aerial cameras are really funky looking but if it's missing a lens or a whole back plate or some other major piece, I don't think I would display it.

Functional is definitely better but cameras are just beautiful objects and the historical aspect for older ones is so interesting. I don't need another hobby -- like camera collecting -- but it would be tempting if I came across some good candidates, like at flea markets.
