Hi all,

I'm making dry plates and want to ensure that when they ship out, they are guaranteed to fit. In most cases they do, but there's some oddball holders that tend to be undersized.

I only have a limited selection of holders to measure. 4x5 and 5x7 I have nailed down, but other sizes it's a bit more nebulous.

If you have a plate holder or adapter, can you measure the clearance dimensions for where the plate is inserted? For example, on my antique 4x5 holders the width is 4.1"

Also, if you have antique dry plates can you measure them? Preferably with calipers, but a good ruler measurement would be great.

Just post the manufacturer, dimensions, and the intended size. A picture as well would help if I need clarification.

For example,

Seneca Quarter plate holder.
3.26" x 4.25"

Thank you!

Hello.

I can measure 6-1/2 X 9 Voigtlander and Zeiss Ikon plate holders if that would be of any help.

Hello,
Here are some measures of european plate format.
They are dimensions of septums used for film for plate holders ; septum dimension is same as plate dimension.
I use the septums for old cameras ICA, Zeiss-Ikon, Voigtlander, Gaumont, Gilles-Faller and others "noname"

.

format 18x24 : 18 x 23,9 cm
format 13x18 : 12,9 x 18 cm
format 10x15 : 9,9 x15 cm
format 9x12 : 9 x 11,9 cm
format 6x9 : 6,5 x 9 cm.

Hello,

Plate holders that fit a Voigtlander 6.5 X 9 Avus are as follows --
Overall Width -- 2-31/32"
Overall Thickness -- 11/64"
Overall Height (darkslide removed) -- 4-23/32"
Width of ridge that runs along outside on sides and bottom, engages with camera body -- 5/64"
Thickness of this ridge -- 3/64"
Bottom of holder to where ridge bows out at top (light seal is inside this) -- 4-3/8"
Width of area that plate sits -- 2-9/16
Height of area plate sits (including under spring clip) -- 3-9/16

Dark Slide --
Width -- 2-61/64"
Height from very bottom to ridge that helps block light (also stops slide from proceeding) -- 4-11/16"
Overall Height including bead at top to grab by -- 5-3/16
Material Thickness -- 0.014"

Want the dimensions of a film sheath for this type?

Hello,

The film sheath from an AP plate holder measures 2-35/64 X 3-35/64 X 0.056" thick. The sheath has a little front-to-back play (which isn't a problem, it's spring loaded) so a 1/16" piece of glass would fit fine. It still has a tiny bit of play to move around otherwise so I feel 2-1/2 X 3-1/2 nominal size or maybe 1/32 over would be the best fit. Aside from AP holders these sheaths also fit in the Voigtlander, Zeiss and Mentor holders.

I'm glad you're making these plates to sell. Just goes to show that the whole "They're gonna stop making film" thing is a bunch of worry for nothing. I've been meaning to make a dedicated developing tank for sheet film and plates. Now I really gotta get on it because I want to try some of these out.

Thanks
Brian

Hi Brian,

Thanks. What about 1mm (.040") under nominal in each dimension? There's other holders which seem to require that.

As for developing tanks (and not to derail my own thread too much): If you can tray develop prints now (in a darkroom, under a safelight), then you can develop my plates. Either way, let me know when you want some!

Hello,

I measured and if they were that small they wouldn't be tall enough for the spring clip to hold them. For this style of holder I would say the minimum would be nominal size. At nominal size the glass is only held by about 0.030". For the narrow way being undersized 0.040" would be fine.
