I need to find or make a new septum (dark slide) for a 5"x7" sheet film holder and would like to hear suggestions for available materials.

Cheers

There was a time when I had extra dark slides for various models of both 5x7 and 4x5 film holders.
Unfortunately, I think I tossed 'em all in the trash long ago - couldn't give 'em away fifteen years ago.

CatLabs sold/sells? new replacement metal dark slides for 8x10 holders...not sure about 5x7.
I have seen Ebay listings for used 5x7 dark slides...

I suppose I could use blackened brass sheet material which I failed to consider prior, to this post.

It'll also be easier to fit out with a handle.

Thank both of you for your posts.

I just measured the thickness of one. It's definitely no more than 1/32" and possibly as little as 0.7mm (almost 0.1mm less than 1/32"). A good source for steel of that thickness: cheap cookie sheets. That's what I used when I made some film holders a few years ago.

Just for clarity: The septum in a film holder is the central piece that the film slides into. It is built into the holder. The dark slide slides in from the outside and is removed to make the exposure.

Best,

Doremus

You mean the septum is the divider between the two sides of the film holder. So, the film rests against it. A plate holder can also have a septum and a film sheath could clip into either side and rest against it.

Or that's what I take from the meaning of "septum" (partition).

Cheers and, thank you for clearing that up for us.

With regard to thickness of the missing dark slide, the sister I have is approximately 1mm thick so, 20 gage should fit well enough.

Yes, indeed. It's the partition function that makes a septum a septum. I was simply thinking of sheet-film holders where the septum also has the raised rails to hold the film and was not being as precise as I should have.
