replacement for APX 100???

I used APX 100 until Agfa tanked however many years ago and had to find a new answer when my stock evaporated. Although I miss the color rendition, which was unique, I use TMY2 for everything today, 35mm to 8x10.

Which was sold out? The Rollei Retro in 120? I just got some a couple months ago from B&H (packaged as Rollei Retro) and it was still on their website until very recently.

The Rollei brand APX 100 type 120 conversion (from type 135 stock) is sold out at Maco.
This does not exclude that dealers still have it on stock.

So even though I didn't respond (as there wasn't really a need to) after Henry Posner told me that the Rollei Retro in 120 had been discontinued, he wrote me back again to say that it would still be available in 35mm for a while but that they may start selling 80s and 400s in 120 (currently that's only at Freestyle). I responded with the info on ADOX posted above, and mentioned that I really hoped they would stock it...and he said he'd tell the film buyer. Fingers crossed .

APX 400 as sheet film... Gimme Gimme Gimme! Especially 5x7 is interesting to me. VERY interesting.

And dear Charles - more competition is good. Let the market decide which films survive and which die. We shall find out who plays the market best by listening to the customers and what they want and think they need.

I don't think we can expect prices on par with the old Agfa prices, though. That would be the surprise of the century. But that is of course just speculation.

I am mildly surprised that nobody has mentioned Ilford Delta 100...

It is a fantastic film and it is available in 135, 120, 4x5, 5x7 and 8x10 ! and at reasonable prices.....what more could you want?

While I do somewhat lament the demise of APX100 and it took me attending a Fay Godwin workshop back in the UK in 1992 that made me switch to this emulsion. I was instantly blown away by it's look and capabilities. That said, it's gone, and it is what it is. As such, I have moved onto other films... ACROS is it for my 100 speed film anymore. It works well, and if Mirko and Adox can bring back the APX100 emulsion, so much the better to have more choice. If they don't I won't spend any time on it searching for the last exorbitantly priced roll for expired film on E'Bay that some folks do. While APX100 was great and is great as I have 10 rolls of 35mm to use yet there are others and dare I say it, BETTER alternatives. ANY film can do what you want it to do if you learn it inside out. While it's nice to reminisce about old films or papers, what can we do about it??? Move on, adapt.

Last APX100/400 stock (Rollei Retro 100/400) is gone now so maybe a good replacement for APX 100 is Fomapan 100 which is also available in 35mm, 120 roll film and sheet film.
Alternative Rollei-Maco picked up from Agfa Gevaert in Belgium, aviation film: Retro 80S and Retro 400S.
Retro 80S is available in 35mm, 120 roll film and 127 roll film now. Maybe in the near future also sheet film.
All Retro S films have extended red sensitivity till 750nm and are even suitable for IR photography.

Robert, the question was "what is a good replacement for APX 100". There are probably no films that are less similar to APX 100 and APX 400 than these relabeled aviation films. What do they have in common, except the ISO setting????

Material
APX: Triacetate
Agfa Aviphot: Polyester

Sensitization
APX: panchromatic
Agfa Aviphot: red gets lighter

Grain and look
APX: classic b/w look, APX 400 with too much grain for me
Agfa Aviphot: more like the first T-grain films

So, my verdict is: FP4, Plus-X, Foma 100 and even Efke/Adox 100 are much more similar in every respect.

Again: Best fit will be Fomapan 100 which is on tri-acetate in 35mm but 120 roll film on polyester. In development, e.g. Rodinal almost the same as APX100.

Retro 80S and 400S will have about the same iso setting but are all on polyester and have more contrast then APX 100/400.

FP4+, a good film but different then APX 100, certainly in Rodinal.
Efke 100, a single layer type film, classical film pretty close to APX100.
Plus-X: I have no experience with this film.
