hey all,

i gots a bit o' stuff from a local photographer who has gone all digital, and one of the things in the kit was a film proofer.

namely, a HiP, hpi?

well, the foam was in really bad shape, so i scraped it out, cleaned it all up, windexed the glass and now it looks pretty spank!

a little problem now though: i need a source for foam for it

the glass is 9" wide, and i'd like to find foam that is at least that wide, if not a little more, if possible that is

i'd like the firm, yet plush kind (similar to what is in pelican-style cases, but in a 9"W X 1/4" thick sheet, or roll.

if anyone has any ideas, preferably in So Cal(driveable from LA) or on the web.

i've checked the Fleabay already, but no luck. if you can find it, please tell me =)

thanks

dan

I used a couple of thick neoprene mouse pads, cut to fit. It's much stiffer than the foam, but it works well for me. Around LA you could probably get neoprene by the yard.

I would check the yellow pages for foam that is used for furniture refurbishing.
That kind of foam comes in all kinds of thickness' and will be cut to size for you.

Good luck !

I took on a project to build a contact printing frame a while back - that has a similar requirement.

I found sheets of foam intended for art/craft projects at an AC Moore store that worked just fine. I found an identical product in a "dollar store" that worked even better since it was much less expensive.

I love those R$ 1 stores here in Brazil. ( US$ 1,- = R$ 3,- )
I got a handsaw at one with hardened teeth for R$ 7,25.

As a photographer you need to be inventive and be able to see how you could adopt things to meet the needs of your photography.
Rubber mats for under hot pans can be used for their dampening and so on.

Just keep your eyes open and imagine what you can do with it.

I was going to suggest a craft store but 1/4" thick is thicker than a lot of the foam sheets at those places. I've seen cheap foam mattress covers, shipping/packing material, etc. that would fit the bill. A trip to walmart might be all you need.

Also American Science and Surplus (www.sciplus.com) has a lot of good stuff like that.
Things to make giant desk pads/etc. Good for lots of odds and ends.
