Should I, and if so, what would be your reason(s)? What are the real-world tadeoffs in doing so? Should I stick with my D1x?
I am not sure why you selected the D200 as an either/or replacement for the D1X. There are a lot of used Nikon models to choose from. Go to Google. Compare specs. Decide what is important to you. Make a decision based on your own requirements.
Is the D200 suppose to show the picture count when it is off?
The D300 displays the remaining number of pictures left on the memory card when the power switch is off. I see no mention of this in the D200 manual.

I have no experience with the D1x but shot about any other dig Nikon.the D200 had about the best skin tones, which I missed when upgrading to the D700 but got back with the D800.Exposure was also excellent with the D200.Should I, and if so, what would be your reason(s)? If you read between the lines, you can just make out that he prefers the CCD sensor to the CMOS, so the D300 is out. Unfortunately, he is incapable of making a decision for himself based on features. It's just easier to let a bunch or random people on the internet make the decision for you.i don't have a memory card in my d200 and it says [-E-} at the moment so i am guessing
it says how many images are on the card. ive been using my d200 for ages, had a d100 before that...
if/when i upgrade it .. im going to get a d3o0 .. bodies are cheap, small, i and rugged.. dont' get me wrong
the 200 is a great camera, haven't had any troubles with it ... i figure the 300 is less "old" so i might as well
get something a little younger..

a better choice is a D600 / 610 (full format with focus).
I definitely see a full-frame digital camera in my future!
How long do you think you will be using the D200 before you want another upgrade?
I bought a D300s. I will probably buy a full-frame by the end of the year.
