Should I, and if so, what would be your reason(s)? What are the real-world tadeoffs in doing so? Should I stick with my D1x?

I am not sure why you selected the D200 as an either/or replacement for the D1X. There are a lot of used Nikon models to choose from. Go to Google. Compare specs. Decide what is important to you. Make a decision based on your own requirements.

One is price. Another is image quality (I don't like the later models rendering). Finally, I use a lot of manual focus lenses which limits the bodies that are compatible.

What I know about the D200 is that it is smaller, lighter and has better flash and battery technology (the older ones are convertible), but poorer balance, handling and coolness factor. Did I miss anything?

I have no experience with the D1x but shot about any other dig Nikon.the D200 had about the best skin tones, which I missed when upgrading to the D700 but got back with the D800.Exposure was also excellent with the D200.

Is the D200 suppose to show the picture count when it is off?

i don't have a memory card in my d200 and it says [-E-} at the moment so i am guessing
it says how many images are on the card. ive been using my d200 for ages, had a d100 before that...
if/when i upgrade it .. im going to get a d3o0 .. bodies are cheap, small, i and rugged.. dont' get me wrong
the 200 is a great camera, haven't had any troubles with it ... i figure the 300 is less "old" so i might as well
get something a little younger..

If you read between the lines, you can just make out that he prefers the CCD sensor to the CMOS, so the D300 is out. Unfortunately, he is incapable of making a decision for himself based on features. It's just easier to let a bunch or random people on the internet make the decision for you.

oh well .. i don't know much about sensor types
just know you push the button and there you go..

the cameras are cheap enough on eboink and laig's crist
he could probs buy 1 of each body take them for a test drive
and unload the one not wanted .. but i guess that is too easy

I'm not random.

Without reading between the lines, for a lighter body either a D200 or 300. Both are affordable, somewhat smaller and lighter than the D1x, don't know how ISO performance stacks up, the D300 ought to be better overall, newer sensor, more MP? The D1X was a pro level body so overall better build quality.

I definitely see a full-frame digital camera in my future!

the D600/610 was the model that made FF available to many, now it's price used makes it a bargain, it has focus motor in the body for older AF lenses.

I bought a D300s. I will probably buy a full-frame by the end of the year.

I think it's best to simply buy the full frame whenever you can. Skip all the intermediate upgrade. You know each of your upgrade doesn't really make you happy. Each of those only makes it as good as you can afford perhaps? But if money is the problem then it's best to only buy the camera you really want. Don't buy the one that is just only better. It cost more money that way. I think you don't make a living with photography right? If so buy only the camera you really want. Don't yet have enough money? don't buy anything.
