Repair questions

I have a couple problems that I could use some help with.

1. I bought a Franka Solida a while back, but it is missing the take-up spool metal tab to engage the 120 film reel. Any ideas of who can fix this for me....for not a lot of money. Shutter and lens are fine. (sorry for the fuzzy image)

2. I bought a couple Voigtlander Avus' and this lens has the problem you can see... Is that fungus, mildew, moisture, or something else, and who can fix that for me? The shutter works well..

It's a little hard to tell but is there a slot in the part that protrudes?
If there is what about making a cross piece from a piece of aluminum or brass & expoxy it in place.

John is right about the Solida. I took the spindle out of my Solida 3. I expected the drive dog to be pinned to the spindle, but it turns out it is only held by friction - which is why yours is AWOL! See the picture below - the thickness of the brass strip is .058", so try to find a piece a little thicker and file it to size.

The spots on your Avus lens could be fungus, in which case vinegar will remove them, or they could just be spots. Either way a clean is in order. The haze will probably clean off. It may be caused by lubricant 'outgassing'.

Not sure what the standard is where you are but over here 1.6mm is a standard thickness for sheet aluminium. That should be quite a good interference fit.

That's great information, mine is a Franka Solida III as well.

One of my client's is a machinist and said he would machine the tab for me as a favour, as we have a really great relationship. ....basically, I have not lost him any money in his investments

Do I glue the part in, or is there a better way once the metal tab is ready?

the lens looks like a goner, haze can be cleaned out, but fungus and mold leave marks on the glass itself, which can be fixed by repolishing the lens surfaces, which will lose any coating if it is there, and will alter the geometry of the lens elements.

I wouldn't write the lens off just yet. It may well not be fungus. It does attack uncoated lenses but normally cleans off them very well. I reckon I've de-fungused over 40 lenses (thanks, eBay!) and only 2 or 3 have been badly enough affected for the glass to have been etched. Maybe half have suffered some degree of coating loss; the rest show very little damage, and often none at all.

For the Solida, if the metal strip is a tight fit you could rely on friction as Franka did in the first place, but for convenience, and to save taking the spindle out to press it in, you could get it made a slightly easier fit and secure it in place with Loctite - your machinist friend will probably have some or an equivalent.

I'm sending this lens to Flutots to see what they can do with it, I have 3 other shutters that probably need CLA anyway, so I might as well.

You can just start by cutting a penny down to the right size and glue it in.

Lens has been fixed locally at Camtech Photographic in Hamilton, Ontario. They did a great job, and I did not have to worry about shipping fees or customs duty, etc.
