Very sad news. My first ever proper photo book from the early 80s, World Photography, edited by Bryn Campbell, (very recommended) had a folio and interview with Rene Burri and have admired his work ever since. I particularly like his book Die Deutschen, which was planned originally to be next in a series of books starting with Robert Frank's The Americans. Not as groundbreaking as Frank's book, but a real classic showing Germany in the years after the war, similar in the way Frank captured a certain time in America. I met Burri briefly a few years ago in Arles which confirmed everything I had heard from a friend who had worked for him who made the introduction. A real gentleman, with wit and humour, compassion and a strong interest in others. And a bloody marvellous photographer!
