Adelaide Film and Darkroom Users Group by hoffy37, on Flickr

Just a quick reminder. The next meeting of the Adelaide Film and Darkroom Users Group is this coming Monday, the 11th of July, At the Gilbert Street Hotel, 88 Gilbert Street, Adelaide. We will be meeting Upstairs from 7:30PM.

We will be having a Print Show and tell, so bring some prints along that you would like people to look at. It will be a perfect opportunity to display some work and maybe get some feedback.

If you have any queries, please contact me via PM, or the details on the flier above (& I NOW have my phone number correct!)

Cheers

Can really recommend the get together. My first time and the friendly atmosphere was great. Location was excellent as well. Very much looking forward to the next gathering.

And it was great to meet you, Steve.

This morning I put two and two together and had an Adelaide moment - I remembered Ervin telling me that it was a Steve who got him onto BTZS, which means that that's probably your old Shen Hao he's using... It was of course Ervin (who I've known for about 20 years) who got me onto LF and who loaned me his BTZS tubes to do a couple of test sheets. I've been doing all my printing in his darkroom these last few months between coming back from Perth and getting my laundry sorted out.

I've known Ervin for a reasonable time as well and we often share a phone call or a nice bowl of soup. He has certainly made good use of the Shen. He has a wonderful artistic approach to photography. I'm much closer to the city than Lobethal

Yes, it was good that you could come along Monday night Steve!

For those of you who missed it, we had a good night. The gathering was small (only 5), but the discussions were very interesting and enlightening. What started out as a Print show and tell, turned into a discussion on Film and paper curves, then a discussion on the merits of the BTZ system for Larger format, back to print show and tell. I thoroughly enjoyed the night.

The next meeting is down for the 15th of August (a slight change of routine) at the Gilbert again. Steve has offered to bring along some of his large format gear (including some very interesting glass) for us to look at and for him to explain.

Cheers

Morning all,

OK, I would preferrably like to keep get togethers on a Monday night where at all possible. I would also like to keep things on a routine where at all possible. The preferred night would have been the 8th of August, but unfortunately, the Gilbert was booked on that night. This is why I moved it by one week to the 15th.

But, since we are a small group, I would be happy to entertain moving the next meeting to the Monday after, the 22nd of August as long as it doesn't cause too many issues (& the pub is available)

From there, we can stay on either 4th Monday of each month, or try and move back the 2nd Monday.

I will email this out as well.

Let me know your thoughts.

Hi All,

just looking at getting back into developing some medium format B&W and was wondering if anyone knows of anywhere in Adelaide where I can get access to a working darkroom?

Cheers,
Matthew

Howdy Matthew,
The only one I can immediately think of is Carclew Youth And Arts Centre in North Adelaide - www.carclew.com.au

That being said, if it's only developing negs you are looking at, have a bit of a search around and you will find how cheap and easy it is to find daylight developing tanks so you can do it at home.

Thanks for that. I think I will try to pick up some gear. I've got a changing bag already but my tanks have disappeared over the years....
Any recommendation as to were to get cheep gear and chemicals? I'd prefer to get locally but if not I can get from vanbar dot com dot au
All I would need at this stage is one tank for 120 film chemicals and bottles to store them in...

For cheap gear, Ebay is your best bet. If you want something now, it doesn't hurt to go through the bits and pieces that they have at L&P in kent Town.

Also, some people aren't aware that L&P (now called Total Photographics) has some used darkroom equipment in a back room. The prices aren't great, but it's worth checking when you go there.

Thanks.
I knew they had issues with trading as l&p a few years ago something to do with an interstate L&P which had rights tot he name.

What about photographic wholesalers?

Yes, they still have gear, but I am not sure of their prices, but they can be a bit ignorant about what they do have (I got the "Kodak don't make film" response from one of their sales guys not too long ago).

Another good one for quick 'crap I am out of.....' type buys are Photoco in the Central Markets. They are a bit more pricey, but they have most of the basic Ilford chems on their shelves.

L&P/Total Photo are good when you need to buy stuff locally, their student discount has been good to me. I've gotten a few good things from their back room too, but sometimes admittedly just because they didn't know what it was. A lot of it is on consignment, so they cant really be blamed for the prices the owners of the stuff set. I picked up a JOBO CPE2 kit with a pile of stuff for $80 once though, so you can get lucky.

And, I'm sorry I missed the dang thing again. I found this thread the day after - August 1st is written in on my calendar now and I'll be there. Any theme for the show and tell? It's always nice to talk to people who know what the things I keep spending all my money on are.
