By making a 6" base rail, one can put both the front and rear standards on either side of the clamp onto that base rail at one time and have a smaller package to stow in whatever backpack that you select. It works really well.
If you need extra extension, just add additional 6" extension rails onto it to the desired length. See the following article that I wrote a few years ago:
