I concur that slide film is the best for testing ANY camera, since it will reveal exposure errors accommodated by the generous exposure latitude of C 41 or BW films. As far as indoor use of the Nikonos...flash work is probably out of the question unless you get the camera's dedicated underwater flash unit, or kludge some sort of adaptor for an above water flash. I'd suggest enjoying the Nikonos as a rainy day camera, immune to the occasional splash, but not underwater without having the seals checked. Do note that the 28mm lens is only suited for underwater use.
Shooting inside? Your profile says you're a RF shooter, you should be good to go, then. Or pick up one of the many SLRs looking for a good home.

The Nikonos SB-105 flash unit is excellently made and impressive. From reading https://www.camerasunderwater.co.uk/nikonos the SB-105 seems to be the best.
