Recommend a Berleback tripod for 8x10?

Hi,

I am set on the Gitzo 1570 MG head, but am looking for a wooden tripod without the cost of Reis, the possibility of legs folding inwards or string as with Zone VI. I have heard good things o Berleback and they seem good value. Would anyone be able to comment on build, finish, stability etc and recommend one for a light 8x10 field woody (4 Kg)? I have looked at the website, but comments would be appreciated as small images and figures dont help much with useability! Comments on models?

I have no experience with the Berleback tripod, but here is something to consider (and to confuse you further) as well as it is within your price range (http://www.stabil.nu/english). I believe Ole Tjugen uses one and swears by it. I have seen one and it looks very sturdy, One Dollars = approx 7.3 Swedish Crowns.

I have the 3-section leg model. I think it is an 8023 model. I chose this model because it closes more compactly for backpacking. I use it with MF SLR and 4x5 wood field. It is a great tripod. Well made, sturdy and very "flexible" in set-up, (in contrast to flexible structurally!!). The heaviest camera I have had on it was a Horseman 450. I think it was just over 10 lbs. I believe it is rated to 22 lbs.

Depending on your use, you may want to consider the 2 leg section models. They do not fold as compactly as the 3 section, but are rated to a higher weight. My guess would be that the 2-section legs would be a bit sturdier for a heavier camera.

I can attest to the ruggedness of the tripods. Mine gets put in streams, lake, oceans, mud, you name it. It has held up remarkably well for the 3 years of use. I do occasionally clean it and put old fashion wood floor wax on the wood.

Not to sound like a commercial, but I am a happy user. If I get an 8x10 field camera, (Lord help my wallet!!), I would probably get a 2 legger for "close to car" shooting.

I've got the 2042 with a Reis JR head on it. Very happy with it. It holds my 8x10 fine. and the price was right. got both for under $200 used.

BTW, I use the Berlebach with a Gitzo G1276M head. Great family of heads!!

I have the 8023, comes without a head for around $170 (Looking Glass, Berkley, CA)

Use it with a Bogen/Manfrotto 3047 head. It holds my 5x7 and 8x10 Tachihara's just fine. I am looking for a head with a lower profile and probably will go with a Gitzo Low Profile.
